205 pages. Two 14-year-old school girls who become best friends because the rest of the world seems to have excluded them. Intelligent, opinionated Julia Beckworth wins math prizes and takes pains to appear primly proper in her school uniform while desperately trying to hide the commune lifestyle that her ``hippie'' mother has forced upon her. In contrast, ``dithery,'' artistic Andre Hayden's family lives tightly structured suburban lives with a perfectly manicured lawn and carefully prepared meals. Yet, behind closed doors, Andre's parents wage venemous warfare, driving their son to leave and making Andre acutely miserable. Ashamed of her private life, neither girl invites the other home; and, ironically, each envies the other's situation. When the two girls find a deserted cottage, they set about making it a refuge from their cares. The appearance of handsome, deceptive Laurie drives a competitive wedge between the girls as they strive for his attention, each wondering if Laurie may be part of the solution that she has been seeking. Klein eloquently conveys a poignant story by allowing each girl to narrate alternate chapters. This complex handling of point of view masterfully dovetails each character's development and moves the plot in a remarkably smooth and suspenseful manner. Klein is at turns breezy, humorous, pensive, and ironic, but never boring. Her story transcends its Australian setting to make universal statements about friendship and love at all ages. For teenagers
