At a time when increasing attention is being given to grammar by teachers and others, this book presents an introduction to English grammar based on a functional approach. lt is not intended as a grammar for teaching directly to school students but as a resource for teachers themselves. A functional grammar is more appropriate for teachers than traditional grammar because it can be more directly related to the ways in which language is being used. Fleaders who have some familiarity with traditional grammar will find this functional approach different from the traditional one, but they will recognise quite a number of familiar landmarks. However, the book has been written on the assumption that many readers may not be familiar with any grammar, and everything is clearly explained as the text unfolds. While this book does not deal explicitly with the teaching of grammar, it is based on the belief that teachers should be confident in their knowledge of the grammatical system. For the more the teacher knows about how the language operates, the more insight he or she will have into how students are using language in their speech and writing. The sort of systematic knowledge of grammar offered by this book becomes a resource to be drawn on continually in talking with students about language. Name in the first page.
