x + 86 pages. Much Australian literature is preoccupied with the notion of place. Many of our literary magazines, for example Island, are named after geographic features, or points of the compass as in Westerly and Northern Perspectives, or even the compass itself as in Quadrant. This preoccupation with location suggests that Australian writers and editors are trying to carve out a place for themselves on this continent using their pens as shovels. The five poets represented in this book, live in Canberra; but all are migrants to this city. The "place" evoked in their poems is not an arbitrary geographical location, it is the outer space of the poet’s environment, and the inner space of the poet’s self. The signposts erected in these poems are markers along an inner journey. Some of the poems tell of places, some of experiences, some express emotions of anger, compassion, sorrow or regret. Almost characteristically the poems spiral out and up as the poet describes his or her physical environment. The poet’s glance then spirals back and down to look inwards, in what are often finely realised brief moments of reflection. This double spiral movement of the poems inspired the collection’s title, 'Looking Out, Looking In'. The poems are mainly traditional in form, but they are not hidebound. Each poem gives the reader a new way of seeing the events of daily life and familiar environments. Poet and poem form two parts of a triad which is completed by the reader. Ex lib.
