A Guide to Northeastern New South Wales: walking, canoeing, caving, Climbing
1 A Guide to Northeastern New South Wales: walking, canoeing, caving, Climbing
Armidale University of New England Mountaineering Club 1981 4th Edition Stapled Cover Good Large 8vo Richard Hale
x + 109 pages. This guide aims to describe some of the potential for outdoor recreation within that area of New South Wales which runs south from the Queensland border to the Manning River, and west from the coast to the Warrumbungle and Nandewar Ranges. within this area there exists a wide variety of topography and vegetation and a correspondingly wide potential for outdoor recreation. Although much of the region has been cleared for agriculture or is subject to intensive forestry operations, relatively large natural areas remain. The general environmental characteristics of North Eastern New South Wales are described in this introduction together with some information which is general to most forms of outdoor recreation in the region. This is followed by sections dealing with four major types of outdoor recreation: walking, canoeing, caving and climbing. The walking section is by far the largest of these, describing a very wide variety of walks with grades varying from easy to hard. The canoeing section is also quite comprehensive although little emphasis is placed on flat water trips in the more heavily developed areas of the coastal regions, and the western slopes and plains. The caving section is less detailed than the preceding two in that the actual loca tions of cave entrances are not given because of extensive vandalism of many of the caves in the region. Interested persons are referred to recognised speleological societies. The climbing section is intended as a general introduction to the scope for climbing in the region. Detailed route descriptions are not given as these have been published in a number of guidebooks covering specific climbing areas.

5 Regional Planning in Australia: A History of Progress and Review of Regional Planning Activities Through the Commonwealth
Australia Commonwealth Department of Post-War Reconstruction 1949 1st Edition Hard Cover Very Good 8vo
103 pages including a folded large coloured map of Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia first directed its attention toward regional Australia as a specific policy concern under PM John Curtin and the Minister for Post-War Construction and later PM Ben Chifley. Underlying socio-economic policy objectives included the utilisation of natural resources, defence imperatives and urban decentralisation. A plan for regional infrastructure and resource development arose through a series of Commonwealth/state conferences, culminating in 1949 with the publication of Regional Planning in Australia by the Commonwealth Department of Post-War Reconstruction. Under the CDPWR, the nation was divided into almost 100 regions leading to, in many instances, the establishment of ‘regional development committees’ (RDCs) that were expected to prepare resource inventories and regional plans ‘directed towards the full development of the region’s resources in order to maintain the maximum population. CONTENTS: PREFACE. PART ONE: CHAPTER ONE - THE GROWTH OF THE REGIONAL PLANNING ORGANIZATION. CHAPTER TWO - REGIONAL PLANNING ADMINISTRATION. CHAPTER THREE - SURVEYS AND PLANNING. PART TWO: CHAPTER FOUR - COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA. CHAPTER FIVE - COMMONWEALTH - STATE PRO]ECTS. CHAPTER SIX - NEW SOUTH WALES. CHAPTER SEVEN - VICTORIA. CHAPTER EIGHT - QUEENSLAND. CHAPTER NINE - SOUTH AUSTRALIA. CHAPTER TEN - WESTERN AUSTRALIA. CHAPTER ELEVEN - TASMANIA.

The Truth about the Killing of Daniel Yock: Workers Inquiry Exposes Police Murder
6 The Truth about the Killing of Daniel Yock: Workers Inquiry Exposes Police Murder
Australia Labour Press Books 1994 1875639063 / 9781875639069 1st Edition Half-Leather Good 12mo
158 pages including b/w illustrations. On March l9, 1994 an independent Workers Inquiry was convened in Brisbane to uncover the truth about the police killing of Daniel Yock, an 18 year old Aboriginal youth. Yock died on November 7, 1993 after being chased and tackled to the ground by police, handcuffed, left unconscious and then dumped in the back of a police paddy‘ wagon - all in broad daylight in front of eye-witnesses. Yock was the 52nd Aborigine to die in custody since the May 1989 cut-off date for the federal Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and the 151st since 1980. Held in the face of strenuous efforts by the state to silence it, the Workers Inquiry exposed not only the cause of Yock’s death, but the elaborate cover-up organised by the police, the Goss government and the Aboriginal leaderships. This volume contains the record of the campaign conducted by the Socialist Labour League and the Committee for a Workers Inquiry, the evidence which was presented to the public hearing, and the findings brought down by the Workers Inquiry. Remembering Anita Cobby, 6
9 6 Remembering Anita Cobby
Australia Random House 2016 192532415X / 9781925324150 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
viii + 232 pages, including 16 pages of unnumbered b/w and colour illustrations. John Cobby finally tells his story, 30 years after the murder of his wife, Anita. On 4 February 1986, John Cobby's life imploded. He was driving up the coast looking for his missing wife, Anita, when over the radio he heard: 'The body of a naked woman has been found in a paddock in western Sydney.' . . . As details emerged of the rape and murder of the gentle nurse and former beauty queen, outrage engulfed Australia. Five men were caught and, amid unprecedented security, jailed for life. For young reporter Mark Morri, the case was a baptism of fire. Told to 'find the husband', he despaired: Cobby had changed his name and disappeared. But the Daily Mirror found him, and Morri's interviews sold like hotcakes. For nearly 30 years, Morri and Cobby kept in touch. In this book John finally opens up, recounting how he and Anita fell in love, suffered the pain of miscarriage and then went travelling. He also explains why they were apart at the time of the murder. Weaving in chilling material from the autopsy and police files, and interviews with detectives who hunted down the killers, Mark Morri explores the ripple effects of the murder that still shocks a nation. Mark Morri, as a crime reporter in the '80s, worked at the Daily Mirror, covering the Sydney gangland murders, the Father's Day Bikie massacre and the abduction of Sydney schoolgirl Samantha Knight. Promoted to Chief of Staff, he still specialised in crime reporting, covering the Port Arthur massacre in 1996 and the backpacker murders by Ivan Milat. He worked for a brief time on the New York Post before coming back to the Daily Telegraph again as Chief of Staff. Over the past thirty-five years, Mark has covered nearly every major crime in Sydney, building contacts throughout the police force (and the criminal world). He is currently the crime editor of the Sydney Daily Telegraph. Extra postage charge may apply.

Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives), Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray
10 Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives)
Australia Oxford University Press 1998 0195535901 / 9780195535907 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
169 indexed pages. Australians are often said to be obsessed with sport, and playing and watching sport have long been regarded as national pastimes. Sport in Australian History is an innovative and exciting study of the political, economic, social, and cultural role that sport has played in Australia since European settlement. The authors investigate many of the myths surrounding the place of sport in Australian culture. They demonstrate that, although Australians are far from unique in their fascination with sport, a historical study of their involvement - both as participants and spectators - can nevertheless tell us a great deal about Australian society. Indeed, in many respects, sport can be viewed as a microcosm of wider society, reflecting, for example, attitudes to violence and gender relations. Taking a thematic approach, the authors dwell on the values, ideas, and myths that have shaped the nations sporting culture over time. The book focuses on issues such as the sports industry; the place of women; the participation of groups not traditionally involved in mainstream Australian sport (such as Aborigines, the disabled, ethnic groups, and the aged); the influence of science and technology; and controversial topics such as violence, drugs, corruption, the law, and the role of childrens sport. Readers interested in sport, culture, recreation, and history will find much to enjoy in this challenging and thought-provoking book. Contents: Part 1: Sporting belief, historical record. Part 2: The sports industry. Part 3: Political football. Part 4: Sporting women. Part 5: Groups on the margins - minority experiences in sport. Part 6: Stretching the limits - sports performance. Part 7: Not "playing the game" - problems in sport. Part 8: State of play; major readings.

Australia NewSouth Pub 2013 1742233848 / 9781742233840 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
x +182 indexed pages. In 2012, Anne Summers gave two landmark speeches about women in Australia, attracting more than 120,000 visits to her website. Within weeks of their delivery Prime Minister Julia Gillard's own speech about misogyny and sexism went viral and was celebrated around the world. Summers makes the case that Australia, the land of the fair go, still hasn't figured out how to make equality between men and women work. She shows how uncomfortable we are with the idea of women with political and financial power, let alone the reality. Summers dismisses the idea that we should celebrate progress for women as opposed to outright success. She shows what success will look like. eBook available from UNSW Bookshop View the table of contents here.
