Australia Commonwealth Department of Post-War Reconstruction 1949 1st Edition Hard Cover Very Good 8vo
103 pages including a folded large coloured map of Australia. The Commonwealth of Australia first directed its attention toward regional Australia as a specific policy concern under PM John Curtin and the Minister for Post-War Construction and later PM Ben Chifley. A plan for regional infrastructure and resource development arose through a series of Commonwealth/state conferences, culminating in 1949 with the publication of Regional Planning in Australia by the Commonwealth Department of Post-War Reconstruction. Under the CDPWR, the nation was divided into almost 100 regions leading to, in many instances, the establishment of ‘regional development committees’ (RDCs) that were expected to prepare resource inventories and regional plans ‘directed towards the full development of the region’s resources in order to maintain the maximum population. 6 The Truth about the Killing of Daniel Yock: Workers Inquiry Exposes Police Murder
Australia Labour Press Books 1994 1875639063 / 9781875639069 1st Edition Half-Leather Good 12mo
158 pages including b/w illustrations. On March l9, 1994 an independent Workers Inquiry was convened in Brisbane to uncover the truth about the police killing of Daniel Yock, an 18 year old Aboriginal youth. Yock died on November 7, 1993 after being chased and tackled to the ground by police, handcuffed, left unconscious and then dumped in the back of a police paddy‘ wagon - all in broad daylight in front of eye-witnesses. Yock was the 52nd Aborigine to die in custody since the May 1989 cut-off date for the federal Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and the 151st since 1980. Held in the face of strenuous efforts by the state to silence it, the Workers Inquiry exposed not only the cause of Yock’s death, but the elaborate cover-up organised by the police, the Goss government and the Aboriginal leaderships. This volume contains the record of the campaign conducted by the Socialist Labour League and the Committee for a Workers Inquiry, the evidence which was presented to the public hearing, and the findings brought down by the Workers Inquiry. Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives), Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray
9 Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives)
Australia Oxford University Press 1998 0195535901 / 9780195535907 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
169 indexed pages. Australians are often said to be obsessed with sport, and playing and watching sport have long been regarded as national pastimes. Sport in Australian History is an innovative and exciting study of the political, economic, social, and cultural role that sport has played in Australia since European settlement. The authors investigate many of the myths surrounding the place of sport in Australian culture. They demonstrate that, although Australians are far from unique in their fascination with sport, a historical study of their involvement - both as participants and spectators - can nevertheless tell us a great deal about Australian society. Indeed, in many respects, sport can be viewed as a microcosm of wider society, reflecting, for example, attitudes to violence and gender relations. Taking a thematic approach, the authors dwell on the values, ideas, and myths that have shaped the nations sporting culture over time. The book focuses on issues such as the sports industry; the place of women; the participation of groups not traditionally involved in mainstream Australian sport (such as Aborigines, the disabled, ethnic groups, and the aged); the influence of science and technology; and controversial topics such as violence, drugs, corruption, the law, and the role of childrens sport. Readers interested in sport, culture, recreation, and history will find much to enjoy in this challenging and thought-provoking book. Contents: Part 1: Sporting belief, historical record. Part 2: The sports industry. Part 3: Political football. Part 4: Sporting women. Part 5: Groups on the margins - minority experiences in sport. Part 6: Stretching the limits - sports performance. Part 7: Not "playing the game" - problems in sport. Part 8: State of play; major readings.

51st State? (Scribe Short Books), Altman, Dennis
16 Altman, Dennis 51st State? (Scribe Short Books)
Australia Scribe 2006 1920769986 / 9781920769987 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
137 pages. Australian prime ministers since Harold Holt have all fostered close relationships with the United States, but John Howard has initiated economic and military policies that have bound the two countries even tighter. As a result, many Australians now believe that not only our sovereignty but also our very identity as a nation is under threat, and that we are fast becoming America's 51st state. If this view is correct, it should be reflected not only in our foreign policy but also in our domestic policies. Indeed, the weakening of social safety nets, the privatisation of areas long seen as government responsibilities, and the signing of the Free Trade Agreement all point to the triumph of US-style neo-liberalism. Yet, as Dennis Altman shows, the story is not so simple. Even as official rhetoric immerses us ever deeper into the US worldview, the resilience of the Australian social contract is imposing real limits on the application of neo-liberal principles. And, despite his enthusiastic membership of the coalition of the willing, Howard has assiduously cultivated economic and political ties within our region which, as the global balance of power shifts, will become increasingly relevant. In this elegant and sophisticated meditation on Australian identity, Altman suggests that the tendency to attribute malign American influence to everything we dislike about the contemporary world is the flipside of seeing the US as the only model worthy of emulation, and serves to conceal the deeper questions we face namely, how does Australia imagine its future?

Making Safety Work: Getting Management Commitment to Occupational Health and Safety, Andrew Hopkins
18 Andrew Hopkins Making Safety Work: Getting Management Commitment to Occupational Health and Safety
Australia Allen & Unwin 1995 186373869X / 9781863738699 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
208 indexed pages. Managers are often reluctant to commit to occupational health and safety despite proven benefits to employees and the organisation. In Making Safety Work, Andrew Hopkins looks at the reasons behind the reluctance and argues that the current policy of emphasising 'safety pays' is not effective. Rather, it is the threat of personal prosecution that most impresses employers. Based on interviews with Australian managers and occupational health and safety officers, Making Safety Work includes extensive case material from a wide variety of organisations. Hopkins also outlines strategies which OHS officers and representatives can use to gain management cooperation and build a safety culture within their organisation. Making Safety Work is essential reading for occupational health and safety practitioners, as well as students of management, organisational behaviour, business regulation and social policy.
