The Misogyny Factor, Anne Summers
3 Anne Summers The Misogyny Factor
Australia NewSouth Pub 2013 1742233848 / 9781742233840 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
x +182 indexed pages. In 2012, Anne Summers gave two landmark speeches about women in Australia, attracting more than 120,000 visits to her website. Within weeks of their delivery Prime Minister Julia Gillard's own speech about misogyny and sexism went viral and was celebrated around the world. Summers makes the case that Australia, the land of the fair go, still hasn't figured out how to make equality between men and women work. She shows how uncomfortable we are with the idea of women with political and financial power, let alone the reality. Summers dismisses the idea that we should celebrate progress for women as opposed to outright success. She shows what success will look like. eBook available from UNSW Bookshop View the table of contents here.

Feminist Experiences: The Women's Movement in Four Cultures, Bassnett, Susan
5 Bassnett, Susan Feminist Experiences: The Women's Movement in Four Cultures
UK Unwin Hyman 1986 0043012744 / 9780043012741 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
194 indexed pages. The Women's Movement is usually referred to as if it were a constant, global phenomenon. There are women's movements in Europe, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East, India, Japan and Australia, and many women and men assume that they are regional manifestations of the same thing, and share a common core. Susan Bassnett has lived and been involved in the struggles of the women's movement in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom, and has had extensive contacts with feminists in the German Democratic Republic. On the basis of her personal experiences and study of women's history and literature in these countries she is able to present a striking picture of the variety of feminist aims, tactics and priorities in the four countries, and of the character of the women's movement in four very different cultures. In Italy, she focuses on the violence of the women's movement e" its intellectualism and energy. In analysing the American women's movement she dwells on its roots in the past, and its faith in pragmatic solutions. The GDR presents completely different questions, hinging on the relationship between state socialism and feminism. In the UK, Susan Bassnett finds herself returning to that all-pervasive aspect of British life e" class, and its importance for feminists. Throughout, the author writes with a double commitment: first, to furthering our understanding of the diversity of aims of women's movements and their common ground e" the no-mane(tm)s land of female existence; second, to making her book as accessible as possible to all feminists, through drawing on her own personal experience of countries in which she has lived, worked, travelled, and made friends. There is a name in the front fly.

7 Case, Sue-Ellen Feminism and Theatre
U. K. Macmillan 1994 0333390008 / 9780333390009 Reprint Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
149 indexed pages. This study serves as both an introduction to, and an overview of, the relationship between feminism and theatre. lt raises questions for the feminist historian who inherits a tradition of theatre history in which women playwrights and actresses are conspicuously absent and constructs an alternative history of what women have done. In analyzing radical feminism and theatre, materialist feminism and theatre and women of colour, the author explains how political movement has influenced the stage. In examining the development of feminist aesthetics, experiments in organization, performance style and audience, Sue-Ellen Case simultaneously traces the new role of the female actor, the new position of the spectator, the new form of play and the new role of the critic. Examples from the United States, Britain, France and Germany are used to illustrate the common ground and the differences between the feminisms and the women in theatre in these countries.

Australia George Allen & Unwin 1984 0868616044 / 9780868616049 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
215 indexed pages. This is a book that calls into question some of the traditional notions of what history is all about. Five historians who happen to be feminists have chosen to write about women at various points in time across more than a thousand years and two continents. Medieval nuns in Europe. women in pre-industrial England, women in mid-nineteenth century Western Australia, spinsters in late Victorian England and prostitutes early this century are vividly portrayed and the forces which shaped their lives - and ours - are explored. As Margaret Ker says, ‘If we understand the forces which defeated them, are we not better equipped to avoid similar defeat? This is history at its best - accessible to all those who delight in the way glimpses of the intricate fabric of women's lives can illuminate both past and present. At the time of this book's conception the authors were all based in Western Australia and although they are now scattered throughout Australia they are still closely involved in research on women's history. The topics of their research are as diverse as the material in this book. They include research on working class women in the clothing and boot trades in Victoria, women in seventeenth century England and families in nineteenth century Australia. Table of Contents: Introduction Patricia Crawford ; Brides of Christ and poor mortals: women in medieval society Margaret Ker ; From the woman's view: pre-industrial England 1500--1750 Patricia Crawford ; "Helpmeet for man": women in mid-nineteenth century Western Australia Margaret Anderson ; Victorian spinsters: dutiful daughters, desperate rebels and the transition to the new women Patricia Jalland ; "As good a bloody woman as any other woman . . ." prostitutes in Western Australia 1895--1939 Raelene Davidson.

Far and Beyon', Dow, Unity

Australia Spinifex Press 2001 1876756071 / 9781876756079 1st Australian Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
vi + 199 pages. For Mara, mother of four, sole provider for her family, life has never been easy. In a community that relies upon traditional magic to cure AIDS, and blames bad luck upon a bewitching curse, women carry a heavy burden as the world changes around them. But in modern Botswana, the tensions are growing as more and more young people adopt white ways and challenge the heavily divided structure of African society. For Mara, it is her children's dismissal of all the ancient magicks that have held families together for generations; for her son Stan it is the opportunities represented by his white teachers and the education system; and for daughter Mosa it is her burgeoning awareness of the inequality of her home, and community. Together they will develop new strengths and define new goals, enabling them all to triumph and travel 'far and beyon'. Unity Dow is the first woman in Botswana to be appointed High Court judge. Dow has a long record as a human rights attorney, co-founding the Women and Law in Southern Africa Research Project and is a member of International Women's Rights Watch an advocacy organisation. In 1995 Dow challenged the government over the 1982 Citizenship Act, under which Botswana women married to foreigners could not pass on their nationality to their children, though Botswana men married to foreigners could. This led to passage of a legislation that gave women the right to pass on their nationality to their children. Some foxing to page edges.

Dick For A Day: What Would You Do If You Had One?, Edited By Fiona Giles
12 Edited By Fiona Giles Dick For A Day: What Would You Do If You Had One?
Australia Random House 1997 0091834953 / 9780091834951 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
xviii, 268 pages. That outrageous title question is posed to celebrated women - with extraordinary results: serious, humorous and downright strange. As Fiona Giles writes in her introduction: ‘Loved, hated, played with, the penis inspires controversy and ambivalence as much as it represents the possibility of new life, the best of procreative value and the worst of patriarchal excess. Women’s experience of the penis ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous, from the transcendent to the mundane But what if a woman could try one out just for a day. To what uses might it be put? What mischief and adventures, or simple opportunities to inhabit new space? What object lessons for its everyday owners, the men we love?’ In this book we find answers from many writers, feminists, performers and artists. What’s most exciting is that every woman will be able to ponder her own response - and discover, in Dick For a Day, the basis for arguments, fantasies, and gender benders of the most provocative kind.

The Double Standard: A Feminist Critique of Feminist Social Science, Eichler, Margrit
13 Eichler, Margrit The Double Standard: A Feminist Critique of Feminist Social Science
UK Croom Helm 1980 0709901771 / 9780709901778 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
151 indexed pages. Name and date in front fly. This powerfully written book challenges the logic of much of the current feminist literature in the social sciences. Although loyal to the tradition of feminist scholarship, Margrit Eichler argues that many feminist writers have unintentionally reinforced the sexual stereotypes that they seek to destroy, by using the wrong conceptual tools and the wrong language. Terms like ‘sex roles’ and ‘sex identity’ have been especially distorting because they are ambiguous, and in themselves become instruments of sexism. In both the language they employ and the explanations they offer, feminists must transcend sex as a criterion of social difference if they wish to overcome sexism in language and thought. This book argues that the double standard is the only relevant criterion for determining whether an identi?ed sex difference is a matter of concern or not. (A double standard implies that two things which are the same are measured by different standards). Although usually employed in a strictly sexual sense the concept may be used for all types of behaviourin which sex plays a role. Work and play provide one of the mostimportant examples of this. Until recently work was equated with paid work only. Unpaid work was considered non-work and therefore did not deserve pay. Recent analyses of the work women do has demonstrated that women do a lot of work which is substantially comparable to work done by men but women do it without pay. If we put the stress on the behaviours themselves - the work process - it is clear that a double standard has been applied which has differentially rewarded the sexes for engaging in identical behaviour. The arguments of this book are controversial and provoking, but they sharpen the thinking of the feminist critique in a way that few other books have achieved. CONTENTS: lntroduction; The Double Standard in Behaviour; Expectations: the lnadequacy of the Sex;Roles Approach; The Double Standard Internalised: the Inadequacy of the Sex Identity Approach; The Double Standard in the Social Structure: the lnadequacy of Class Analysis; Conclusion: Whither Feminism?

188 pages. I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues ...At first women were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn't stop them. Women secretly love to talk about their vaginas. They get very excited, mainly because no one's ever asked them before.' Eve Ensler A poignant and hilarious tour of the last frontier, the ultimate forbidden zone, THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Hailed as the bible for a new generation of women, it has been performed in cities and colleges throughout the world, and has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement -- V-Day -- to stop violence against women. Witty and irreverent, compassionate and wise, Eve Ensler's award-winning masterpiece gives voice to real women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who reads it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

The Reclaiming of Wisdom: Restoration of the Feminine in Christianity, Griffiths, Josephine
17 Griffiths, Josephine The Reclaiming of Wisdom: Restoration of the Feminine in Christianity
U. K. Avon Books 1994 1897960921 / 9781897960929 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
160 pages. This book was written with the desire of bringing something of this beautiful tradition to the interested reader who does not have access to the theological libraries and wants something that avoids too much technical terminology while giving solid information. The Reclaiming of Wisdom is at once both a scholarly and highly accessible book which examines the role of Sophia, who was revered as the female embodiment of Divinity long before the supremacy of YHWH became acknowledged in Palestine. Such was the potency of her presence in the consciousness of the people that it was difficult for her memory to be entirely erased from the Scriptures. The author takes us back to the contemporary texts with an unerring and compelling enthusiasm, demonstrating beyond doubt the continuing topical relevance of Sophia today as a keystone of women’s important and rightful place in the church. Suffrage to sufferance: A hundred years of women in politics, Haines, Janine
18 Haines, Janine Suffrage to sufferance: A hundred years of women in politics
Australia Allen & Unwin 1992 1863733655 / 9781863733656 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
210 indexed pages including illustrations. It is almost 100 years since women were given the right to vote in New Zealand and, unintentionally, the right to sit in parliament in South Australia. This book covers all this period to the present. It highlights the accounts of women - some well-known but many unknown - without whose bravery, determination and belief in the rights of women, it would still not be possible for women to own property, have custody of their children, be paid the same as men for doing the same work, be allowed to stay in the work-force after marriage, or be entitled to say "no" to sex once married. This book aims to show how recent the struggle for women's rights has been, how hard it was to achieve even small gains - like the right to vote, make a will or get a divorce - and to remind readers that, with only 7% of MPs in English-speaking parliaments being women, there is still a lot more to achieve.
