Heroes and Exiles Gay Icons Through the Ages, Ambrose, Tom
1 Ambrose, Tom Heroes and Exiles Gay Icons Through the Ages
U. K. New Holland 2010 1847734685 / 9781847734686 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
216 indexed pages. Demonised by the Church throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, homosexuals became the scapegoats of society, constantly facing exile or a brutal death. In "Heroes to Exiles", the human cost of this long exile is told through the lives of the most eminent homosexual men and women in history. Some were artists like the wild living Benvenuto Cellini or the repressed Edward Lear. Others were poets such as Thomas Gray, W. H. Auden or novelists such as Henry James and A. J. Symonds. Their places of refuge changed through the centuries from Italy in the 18th, to Paris in the 19th and Berlin, California and Tangier in the 20th. Some experiences were tragic, like those of William Beckford, Lord Byron or Oscar Wilde, and some were triumphant, like the remarkable story of the Ladies of Llangollen who became the most famous lesbians in Europe. Often treated with outright suspicion, homosexuals were targets for the totalitarian dictatorships of the 20th century. As such they were consigned in their tens of thousands to exile in Siberia or to the Nazi death camps. Even when peace returned after World War II most democracies still proscribed homosexual behaviour, forcing the Americans Paul Bowles and James Baldwin to seek exile in Europe and North Africa. Today the tolerance of Ancient Greece has returned to most Western societies although homosexuals are still persecuted in some Islamic countries such as Iran. In "Heroes to Exiles", Tom Ambrose asks if we have finally realised that sexual orientation is as irrelevant to character and achievement as gender and skin colour and if the long exile has ended.

Australia ASCM Publications 1985 0959285334 / 9780959285338 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 8vo
212 pages including b/w illustrations. A collection of articles, poems and personal re?ections that deals with God and human sexuality in an honest, loving and sometimes controversial way. It seeks to answer a need expressed by many people for resources of this kind, and in doing so disregards the boundaries of conformity and conservatism. Christians are no exception. Caught between the promised paradise of God’s love in and through each other and the oppressive hell of a fear-full exploitation, we are all ill at ease as sexual beings. So this book is important because in it we find Christians re?ecting on their experience of sexuality. We hear cries of pain and anger, celebrations of the sensual, questioning thought and uncertainties, stories of growth.

249 pages. It was the common bond of their commonplace assurances that held them together, and although at twelve years of age he was not yet able to digest the significance of this, he had become quietly aware, perhaps ashamed, of his knowledge of growing secret antlers, possibly wings. That among these people he was a changeling. But not even to Essie, not even in a whisper or a dream, did he ever voice it. 'I am different.' This book is a poignant and captivating semi-autobiographical novel that charts the narrator’s coming of age gay in Sydney during the 1930s and 1940s; his postwar move to America; his successful career as a writer; and his lifelong, unfulfilled search for love. This tender and spirited novel traces the life of Seaton Daly, who grows up knowing he is different from those around him, fearing he is second - rate, but remaining true to himself and his quest for love. ‘After fifty years of secreting part of myself, writing Fairyland was like going to a psychiatrist, like fresh air coming into a room.’

U.S.A. Ave Maria Pr 1992 0877934797 / 9780877934790 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
175 pages. The hunger for intimate human relationships calls from deep within us. Your Sexual Self, a healing and formative journey, explores the process of growth that we all must pursue to satisfy this hunger. It invites us to understand and accept our sexuality as the energy and power that enables us to share real intimacy; that enables us to look closely at the process of personal growth that we must pursue to fulfill the hunger for love. The authors help us examine the many seasons of our lives: from the prenatal stage, through infancy, childhood and adolescence, and into young, middle and later adulthood. In each stage they help us re?ect on the power of our sexuality as an awakening call, an energy to explore, and the power to relate. They outline the tasks that we must perform and the needs that must be met at each stage if we are to grow toward maturity in our sexual and relational lives. Their re?ection questions gently lead us back to past hurtful experiences that may have prevented our natural development, offering a way toward healing and growth. The process of learning our own sexual story is a very personal one. It provides us with much "homework for relationships" as we grow toward maturity as Christian lovers. Your Sexual Self is a sensitive and compassionate guide for personal growth, affirming the goodness of creation and the gift of human love. Moderate discoloration in the cover.
