Silent War, Corpus, Victor N.
10 Corpus, Victor N. Silent War
U.S.A. VNC Enterprises 1990 9719115807 3rd Printing Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
192 pages including b/w illustrations. The military career of Lt. Col Victor Corpus began in 1963 when, as a fresh high school graduate of De La Salle College, he entered the Philippine Military Academy. At the Academy, he excelled in military science and sports. When Corpus graduated in 1967, he joined the Philippine Army and trained in Airborne and Special Forces. Shortly thereafter, he was transfered to the Philippine Constabulary and eventually assigned to the elite PC Special Forces. It was there that the young Lieutenant saw for himself how some members of the military had become enemies of the interests of the people and a willing tool of corrupt and violent politicians. In 1970, Corpus returned to the Academy as an instructor in comparative government. In December that year, Lt. Corpus stunned the nation when he defected to the New People’s Army after leading the rebels in a raid of the PMA armory. With his military skills, Corpus helped build up and train the NPA into a fighting force. He was greatly disillusioned, however, by what he learned about the Communist Party of the Philippines and in 1976, he surrendered to one of his PMA classmates. The government, however, made it look like a capture. Corpus was detained in Fort Bonifacio for ten years until the February Revolution when he was released, along with other detained rebel leaders, on orders of President Aquino. It was while in detention that Corpus started writing "Silent War". In October 1986, Corpus was reinstated into the Armed Forces as a Lieutenant Colonel. The following month, Corpus hit the headlines once more with twin revelations: first, that the 1971 bombing of the Liberal Party rally in Plaza Miranda was not ordered by then President Marcos, as was widely believed, but by the Communist Party of the Philippines; and second, that a group of rightwing military officers was planning to launch a coup against the Aquino Government. The coup, codenamed "God Save the Queen" was averted and an investigation was launched by the Commission on Human Rights of the Plaza Miranda bombing. Corpus was assigned to the office of the deputy chief of staff for AFP operations (I-3). It was at ]-3 that Lt. Col. Corpus worked with other officers to finalize the strategy of "war of quick decision" to counter the "protracted war" strategy of the NPA. Victor Corpus was born in Laguna on October 4, 1944. There is a name in the first page.

East Timor, Australia and Regional Order: Intervention and its Aftermath in Southeast Asia, Cotton, James S
11 Cotton, James S East Timor, Australia and Regional Order: Intervention and its Aftermath in Southeast Asia
U.S.A. Routledge 2006 0415429846 / 9780415429849 Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
193 indexed pages. This book explains the exceptional nature of the East Timor Intervention of 1999, and deals with the background to the trusteeship role of the UN in building the new polity. All of these developments had an important impact on regional order, not least testing the ASEAN norm of 'non-interference'. Australian complicity in the Indonesian occupation of East Timor was a major factor in the persistence of Indonesian rule in the territory which was maintained for twenty-five years despite international censure and which required an unremitting campaign against the independence movement. This work reviews the reasons for that history of complicity, and explains the extraordinary change of policy that led ultimately to the occupation of the territory by the Australian-led INTERFET coalition. Contents: 1. East Timor and Australia: The 25-year policy legacy 2. Australian Relations with Indonesia and the East Timor Issue 3. The Failure of Indonesian Policy 4. The East Timor Intervention, Humanitarian Norms and Regional Order 5. Australia's East Timor Commitment: Causes and consequences 6. Australia's East Timor: The official version and its critique 7. Outcomes: Peacekeeping lessons, security dilemmas, bi-lateral tensions 8. Independent Timor-Leste in a Regional and Global Context. James Cotton is a highly respected Australian academic who has written extensively about Asian politics and political thought. A Professor at the University of New South Wales, he is the author of over 150 publications and currently acts as consulting editor of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. On the struggle for democracy in Vietnam, Dao, Tang Duc
12 Dao, Tang Duc On the struggle for democracy in Vietnam
Australia Butterfly Books 1994 0947333703 / 9780947333706 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
xi + 244 indexed pages icluding bibliography. This title is the first book in the English language which explains the cultural, religious and political factors affecting Vietnam today. The author is a practising lawyer in Sydney. His book is the result of painstaking research. It is a revealing and clearly written thesis on the problems and cultural influences that have shaped this troubled nation for centuries. The successive effects of many centuries of Chinese domination, French colonisation, and most recently the disastrous Vietnam war which shook the world and humbled America - all these have led to the Vietnam of today, run by a Communist government of the kind that has been discredited and all but disappeared elsewhere in the world. The author, writing from his own Vietnamese cultural and family background, has examined these matters with a clarity that allows us to see the complex issues without ideological or sympathy-seeking overtones. This book is recommended reading for expatriate Vietnamese, as well as Western readers who are concerned about the South-East Asian question and bewildered by its complexity. There are small creases in the cover.

Australia Pandanus Books 2002 1740760166 / 9781740760164 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
vii + 163 pages including glossary. In Indonesia, things are never as they seem on the surface. Not even garages, where magic is used to repair cars. And onece you start asking questions, you'd never believe where the answers could lead you. Munin, a former political prisoner, runs a magic garage in Setiabudi, a central Jakarta community earmarked for development. Setiabudi is a bustling inner-city community peopled by a fascinating cross-section of Jakartans from the elite and the privileged to those who are living on the street and will be most impacted by the redevelopment. As he repairs one of his landlord's cars, Munin receives spirit warnings of change. What the change might be is not clear: is it the land clearance before redevelopment, or could it be something worse? Chenny is a transvestite beautician and sexworker, dreaming of a new life after surgery. Chenny seeks the assistance of Munin's magical powers in relation to a client, who is also linked to the proposed redevelopment. Events unfold over a week and during this period we meet many people in Setiabudi: from the privileged to the dispossessed, they each have a role in this novel as representatives of aspects of Indonesia that many of us are unaware of. Munin's refusal to deal with his past and Chenny's desire to escape into a new future in part parallel tension within Indonesia between a desire for the benefits of development and the culture and history of the past. Whose vision for indonesia will prevail in Setiabudi - that of Suharto, or that of Soekarno? There is an inscription in the first page which seems signed by the author.

16 Foot, Rosemary (Editor China Across the Divide: The Domestic and Global in Politics and Society
U.S.A. Oxford University Press 2013 0199919887 / 9780199919888 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
231 indexed pages. Understanding China's role in the world has become one of the crucial intellectual challenges of the 21st century. Recognizing the interpenetrated nature of the domestic and international spheres, this book uncovers some of the key interactions between the global and domestic forces that determine China's external behavior. The first section of the book concentrates on the role of ideas. It examines Chinese conceptions, at both the elite and mass levels, of the country's status and role in global politics, and how these conceptions can influence and frame policies. The second section provides evidence of Chinese societal involvement in transnational processes that are simultaneously transforming China and other parts of the world, often in unintended ways. The third section assesses the impact of globalization on China in issue areas that are central to global order, and outlines the domestic responses-from resistance to embrace-that it generates. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach involving scholars in international relations, history, social anthropology, and area studies, this book offers a sophisticated understanding of Chinese thought and behavior and illustrates the impact that China's re-emergence is having on 21st century global order.

The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), which began on July 24, 2003, has been a remarkable success, in part because of the consistency of its message, the strength of its leadership, and its uncommon support for, rather than overt control of, the Solomon Islands government and policing capability. This study reviews RAMSI operations through the lens of a broader application to current and future counterinsurgency efforts.
