Culture, Identity and Broadcasting in Ireland: local issues, global Perspectives
2 Culture, Identity and Broadcasting in Ireland: local issues, global Perspectives
Ireland Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's Universit 1991 0853894094 / 9780853894094 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
156 pages. Broadcasting plays a central role in promoting and defining notions of national and cultural identity. In Ireland, where identity and cultural tradition is an area of conflict and dispute, broadcasting plays this role in extremely difficult circumstances. However, the changing political configuration of Europe and the impact of new broadcasting technologies, as well as recent policy developments have profound implications for the relationship between broadcasting and notions of identity. This book records the proceedings of a symposium, sponsored by the Cultural Traditions Group and hosted by Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, which looked at these questions in detail. In an introductory essay, ‘Inventions and Re-imaginings: Some thoughts on Broadcasting and Identity in Ireland‘, the conference organiser, Martin McLoone provides a challenging analysis of the historical context to these debates and offers his own thoughts on future developments. Martin McLoone is a Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. His publications include Media Studies in Education (Dublin, 1983), and Television and Irish Society (edited with J. MacMahon; Dublin 1984).

The Truth about the Killing of Daniel Yock: Workers Inquiry Exposes Police Murder
3 The Truth about the Killing of Daniel Yock: Workers Inquiry Exposes Police Murder
Australia Labour Press Books 1994 1875639063 / 9781875639069 1st Edition Half-Leather Good 12mo
158 pages including b/w illustrations. On March l9, 1994 an independent Workers Inquiry was convened in Brisbane to uncover the truth about the police killing of Daniel Yock, an 18 year old Aboriginal youth. Yock died on November 7, 1993 after being chased and tackled to the ground by police, handcuffed, left unconscious and then dumped in the back of a police paddy‘ wagon - all in broad daylight in front of eye-witnesses. Yock was the 52nd Aborigine to die in custody since the May 1989 cut-off date for the federal Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and the 151st since 1980. Held in the face of strenuous efforts by the state to silence it, the Workers Inquiry exposed not only the cause of Yock’s death, but the elaborate cover-up organised by the police, the Goss government and the Aboriginal leaderships. This volume contains the record of the campaign conducted by the Socialist Labour League and the Committee for a Workers Inquiry, the evidence which was presented to the public hearing, and the findings brought down by the Workers Inquiry. Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives), Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray
5 Adair, Daryl; Vamplew, Wray Sport in Australian History (Australian Retrospectives)
Australia Oxford University Press 1998 0195535901 / 9780195535907 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
169 indexed pages. Australians are often said to be obsessed with sport, and playing and watching sport have long been regarded as national pastimes. Sport in Australian History is an innovative and exciting study of the political, economic, social, and cultural role that sport has played in Australia since European settlement. The authors investigate many of the myths surrounding the place of sport in Australian culture. They demonstrate that, although Australians are far from unique in their fascination with sport, a historical study of their involvement - both as participants and spectators - can nevertheless tell us a great deal about Australian society. Indeed, in many respects, sport can be viewed as a microcosm of wider society, reflecting, for example, attitudes to violence and gender relations. Taking a thematic approach, the authors dwell on the values, ideas, and myths that have shaped the nations sporting culture over time. The book focuses on issues such as the sports industry; the place of women; the participation of groups not traditionally involved in mainstream Australian sport (such as Aborigines, the disabled, ethnic groups, and the aged); the influence of science and technology; and controversial topics such as violence, drugs, corruption, the law, and the role of childrens sport. Readers interested in sport, culture, recreation, and history will find much to enjoy in this challenging and thought-provoking book. Contents: Part 1: Sporting belief, historical record. Part 2: The sports industry. Part 3: Political football. Part 4: Sporting women. Part 5: Groups on the margins - minority experiences in sport. Part 6: Stretching the limits - sports performance. Part 7: Not "playing the game" - problems in sport. Part 8: State of play; major readings.

Rebels Without a Cause? Middle Class Youth and the Transition from School to Work, Aggleton, Peter
7 Aggleton, Peter Rebels Without a Cause? Middle Class Youth and the Transition from School to Work
U.S.A. Taylor & Francis 1987 1850002258 / 9781850002253 1st Edition Hard Cover Good 12mo
159 indexed pages. Academic underachievement has long been of interest to teachers and educationalists, as have been the forms of ‘resistance’ employed by disaffected young people in schools and colleges. This book presents findings from a three - year ethnographic study of a group of ‘underachieving’ students in an English college of further education. It identifies patterns of cultural affirmation and ‘resistance’ amongst young people from new middle class backgrounds, and examines the relationship between these and the students’ home and out-of-college lives. The study also examines the consequences of new middle class youth cultural styles for the reproduction of class and gender relations, and raises questions about the radical significance, or otherwise, of middle class ‘resistance’ to schooling. Pictured is the title page of the book.

The Food Chain: A Game of Choice, Allaby, Michael
10 Allaby, Michael The Food Chain: A Game of Choice
U. K. Andre Deutsch 1984 0233976817 / 9780233976815 1st Edition Hard Cover Good 12mo
176 pages including an introduction with 5 pages and 500 numbered paragraphs. This book is a game, like the adventure games you may have played before, and in it you play the part of a ruler. As you read the 500 numbered paragraphs, you have suggested choices which lead you from paragraph to paragraph, just as you would in an adventure game, but the choices you have to make are concerned with the real world, and with feeding hungry people. You will meet famine, civil war, food riots and have to decide between the different claims of people in your country. You may be tempted to give up, but there are successful solutions, only the search for them is long and hard. When you see pictures on television of starving people, usually their misery is due to a local catastrophe. Perhaps there has been an earthquake, or an unusually long drought, or perhaps they are running away from a war that has destroyed their homes and their farms. We send help to such people. We send medicines, blankets, clothes, and we send food. They can be helped because we can see quite clearly what it is they need. This book is people we see less often. They suffer because they are poor; they are poor in ways we ?nd it dif?cult to understand. Do you receive pocket money each week? How much? Let us suppose you are given $1 - and many young people receive more than that. This means that not counting birthday or Christmas money, or special spending money for holidays, you receive $52 a year. That is about as much as the average person earns in a year in Bhutan, the world’s poorest country. That amount must buy food, clothes, fuel for cooking and heating, and it must pay for the home and its repair.

Heroes and Exiles Gay Icons Through the Ages, Ambrose, Tom
11 Ambrose, Tom Heroes and Exiles Gay Icons Through the Ages
U. K. New Holland 2010 1847734685 / 9781847734686 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
216 indexed pages. Demonised by the Church throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, homosexuals became the scapegoats of society, constantly facing exile or a brutal death. In "Heroes to Exiles", the human cost of this long exile is told through the lives of the most eminent homosexual men and women in history. Some were artists like the wild living Benvenuto Cellini or the repressed Edward Lear. Others were poets such as Thomas Gray, W. H. Auden or novelists such as Henry James and A. J. Symonds. Their places of refuge changed through the centuries from Italy in the 18th, to Paris in the 19th and Berlin, California and Tangier in the 20th. Some experiences were tragic, like those of William Beckford, Lord Byron or Oscar Wilde, and some were triumphant, like the remarkable story of the Ladies of Llangollen who became the most famous lesbians in Europe. Often treated with outright suspicion, homosexuals were targets for the totalitarian dictatorships of the 20th century. As such they were consigned in their tens of thousands to exile in Siberia or to the Nazi death camps. Even when peace returned after World War II most democracies still proscribed homosexual behaviour, forcing the Americans Paul Bowles and James Baldwin to seek exile in Europe and North Africa. Today the tolerance of Ancient Greece has returned to most Western societies although homosexuals are still persecuted in some Islamic countries such as Iran. In "Heroes to Exiles", Tom Ambrose asks if we have finally realised that sexual orientation is as irrelevant to character and achievement as gender and skin colour and if the long exile has ended.

The Misogyny Factor, Anne Summers
12 Anne Summers The Misogyny Factor
Australia NewSouth Pub 2013 1742233848 / 9781742233840 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
x +182 indexed pages. In 2012, Anne Summers gave two landmark speeches about women in Australia, attracting more than 120,000 visits to her website. Within weeks of their delivery Prime Minister Julia Gillard's own speech about misogyny and sexism went viral and was celebrated around the world. Summers makes the case that Australia, the land of the fair go, still hasn't figured out how to make equality between men and women work. She shows how uncomfortable we are with the idea of women with political and financial power, let alone the reality. Summers dismisses the idea that we should celebrate progress for women as opposed to outright success. She shows what success will look like. eBook available from UNSW Bookshop View the table of contents here.

Indigenous Peoples, Racism and the United Nations, Australian Building Construction Employees and Builders Labourers' Federation
14 Australian Building Construction Employees and Builders Labourers' Federation Indigenous Peoples, Racism and the United Nations
Australia Common Ground Pub 2001 1863350691 / 9781863350693 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
240 pages. This book was published as both a record of conference proceedings, the workshops and the papers given, and a series of recommendations to be taken forward as agenda items for the United Nations at the World Conference in Durban, South Africa, September 2001. The Regional Meeting of Indigenous Peoples on the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance was hosted by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIe in Sydney, Australia in February 2001. The meeting, designated a satellite meeting by the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights, provided a forum allowing discussion and presentation by Indigenous Peoples from Aotearoa/New Zealand, mainland United States, Hawaii, Canada and Australia on racism and racial discrimination issues that affect Indigenous Peoples in those countries. Indigenous Peoples, Racism and the United Nations preserves a record for those who participated in the Sydney Conference as well as becoming a means to disseminate and canvass both local and international issues of racism and identity in the wider public domain. As well it serves to demystify the role and activities of the United Nations in relation to racism and Indigenous Peoples. This is a book addressing policy makers and politicians, but it is much more than that. It includes a collection of voices telling it 'like it is' for many of the world's Indigenous Peoples. It is a book that should be widely read by non-Indigenous communities as a means of connection with the humanity in us all, and as a call for change. Upper corner of the first leaf was cut off; no text is affected though.
