96 pages. The legend of Thomas Chatterton (1752-1770) is better known than his poetry; the story of a proud, intelligent Bristol boy, unhappily apprenticed to an attorney, who whiled away his time in drawing and writing poetry. He turned to writing ‘medieval’ poems which he passed off as the genuine article. attributing them to one Sir Thomas Rowley. Leaving Bristol after the success of poems written under his own name had convinced him to try to earn his living by writing. Chatterton went up to London. After six months struggling in the city, he could not bear to return to Bristol a failure, and died by taking arsenic. He was seventeen. His poetry was admired by Keats, Shelley and Wordsworth; the modem reader can approach it through its Augustan predecessors and its Romantic successors. The language is plain and resonant. the rhythm wonderfully memorable.
