North Sydney Sketchbook, Gamble, Allan
7 Gamble, Allan North Sydney Sketchbook
Australia Rigby 1982 0727008048 / 9780727008046 Reprint Hard Cover Good Good 8vo Ngaire Souter
55 pages including drawings. Less than 200 years ago, Aborigines, standing on the rocky foreshore of what is today the city of Sydney, would sometimes shade their eyes and point across the water to Warungarea, ‘the other side’. From the earliest days of settlement, when white men renamed this other side Hunter's Hill - through the robust smuggling, farming, business-building years of the ninteenth century, when it became East St Leonard's - North Sydney has been in a constant flux. By the 1860s the area was divided into three boroughs or municipalities, becoming East St Leonard s, (Milson s Point to Mount Street), St Leonard’s (the remaining whole of the North Shore proper) and Victoria (McMahon’s Point). Today, reduced in size somewhat, North Sydney is an impressive splinter city with lofty skyscrapers, fine restaurants, one of the best residential yachting clubs in the world, and, on the site of an early careening area for sailing ships, Australia’s first submarine squadron. Yet for all its sophistication, North Sydney still has nooks and crannies almost untouched by time. Don Bank, an early farmhouse, stands quietly between multi-storied buildings, St Thomas s implacable grey-stone face looks out on bustling streets instead of a tree-lined sulky track; Graythwaite, although no longer a private residence, retains the balmy peace of the past. Allan Gamble's delicate sketches accompany tales of old and new North Sydney told by Ngaire Souter. Ex-library markings/attachments or remnants of including two scratches in the back fly. There are sticky tape marks in the dj.

Woman with Altitude, Horacek, Judy
8 Horacek, Judy Woman with Altitude
Australia Hodder 1998 0733610293 / 9780733610295 Soft Cover Good 8vo
96 pages. Australia has a great tradition of thinking cartoonists. Of the hip new generation, few can match Judy Horacek for wit and originality. Her cartoons celebrate the rich absurdities of contemporary living, from the contradictions of intellectual fads to the simple pleasure of taking to your computer with an axe. Working with a master printmaker, Judy has produced a number of screenprints from a small number of ‘classic’ cartoons - cartoons that have been particularly popular and/or say something particularly important. Woman with Altitude is the very first in the series. This cartoon is probably Judy Horacek’s best known cartoon ever, and it was also the first cartoon she ever had published in the Age. It was already inspiring in its original black and white, but the coloured screen print version is even more special. There is a small inscription in the first page.

13 Lorenzi, Felix Drawing Made easy 4 - Nature
Australia Bay Books Hard Cover Good 8vo
48 pages including drawings. This is the fourth volume of the Drawing Made Easy series, nature is the subject of discussion. However, nature's variations and subtleties are infinite and it is possible to review only a relatively small number of situations. This book provides both the beginner and the more advanced sketcher with ideas and suggestions for solving the problem. But it is not enough merely to follow instructions. Observing nature plays a vital role in learning how to draw: it improves your understanding of the object you are trying to draw. Learning to draw means learning to look, and vice versa. With time, everyone will discover the things he or she particularly enjoys drawing. For some it will be flowers, for others it will be landscapes, while others will be attracted by still-life drawings.
