156 pages including extended bibliography about the role that women play in christianity. Increasingly, women and men are responding to a need to break out of gender patterns no longer experienced as fulfilling. For women within the churches this response confronts special challenges. Breaking out of accepted roles can come to be seen within Christian congregations as a threat to good social order, evidence of a lack of personal commitment, a challenge to the authority of the whole Christian revelation. Too often, the result is that the churches lose talents and commitment they can ill afford to do without. But this state of affairs can change and is changing. The very fact that this book, intended for the ordinary churchgoer, counts as especially important the stories of ordinary people dealing in an everyday setting with gender issues, is a sign of change. This book charts that change. Margaret Ann Franklin is an honorary Research Associate of the University of New England and is a founding mother of the Movement for the Ordination of Women in Armidale. Ruth Sturmey Jones is a writer and researcher with experience in chaplaincy, and is a founding mother of the Movement for the Ordination of Women in Sydney. Among the contributors are protestant clergy (both men and women), teachers and parish workers, clergy wives, a catholic priest and a nun.
