FAQ

The terminology we use to describe our books is generally standard.

  • Description of Book Condition:

Very Good - describes a used book that does show some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either
                        binding or paper.
Good - describes the average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present.
Fair - is a worn book that has complete text pages cover and jacket.
Poor - describes a book that is very worn. It is just a Reading Copy.
Ex-library - books are always described as such.
Age Browning - pages are darkened usually only to edges and closed edges caused by poor quality paper
                              and time.
Foxing - brownish-yellow spots, varying in intensity caused by chemical action in poor quality paper and not
uncommon on many older books. Sometimes this is only on the closed edges and early pages.
Gift Quality - books that have no previous ownership marks, no wear or defects present. Books that would
make a suitable gift. Please, seek our advice if you intend to purchase a book as a good gift.
Uncut - edges are untrimmed by the binder's knife or guillotine. Usually present on older books but
has become fashionable in later modern editions.
Uniform - books with a standard binding style and size or a published series.
Uninscribed - there are no indications of previous owner's name or other writing present. An important
piece of information when purchasing as a gift.
Unopened - the folded pages have never been opened and need to be opened up before being able to be
read. These should only be opened with a non metal knife or card.
