Patron Saints: A Complete Reference Guide, Clifford, Diarmuid (Editor)
41 Clifford, Diarmuid (Editor) Patron Saints: A Complete Reference Guide
U.S.A. Regina Press 2002 0882717375 / 9780882717371 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo William Luberoff & Robert Berran
127 pages including colour illustrations and bibliography. A comprehensive listing of Patron Saints by patronage, country, the official Church calendar and Saints. From the earliest times of the Church, people have always prayed to the saints and asked the saints to intercede for them. On earth we pray for one another. We can also ask the saints to pray for us, because they are in heaven. Their prayers on our behalf are more powerful than the prayers of anyone on earth because they are already in the presence of God. In the saints we see what goodness and holiness really mean. How much less beautiful would the world be without there wonderful models of Christianity? Like shining lights they have illuminated the world with their presence down through the ages.

Leading lawyers look at the Resurrection, Clifford, Ross
42 Clifford, Ross Leading lawyers look at the Resurrection
Australia Albatross Book 1991 0867601272 / 9780867601275 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
143 pages. Did Jesus rise from the dead? What happened to the body of Jesus? Are the writers of the Gospels reliable witnesses? The author selects some of the most prominent lawyers of modern times to sift through the evidence on the most influential figure of history. He describes the lawyers’ professional backgrounds, outlines their contributions to this 2000-year-old debate and reinforces their conclusions by some careful research of his own. A compelling case is made for the familiar claim of the Apostles’ Creed: ‘On the third day he rose again.’ While Ross Clifford believes that ‘the evidence would convince a court of law,’ he argues that we can't leave the matter there. The phenomenon of the resurrection strikes at the very heart of who we are and how we view human existence. inevitably, we find ourselves asking: What does it mean if Jesus did rise from the dead? How does it affect my understanding of life and death? If Jesus rose from the dead, what response does God require of me? Contents: 1. Who wrote the gospels? /? Edmund H. Bennett; 2. Are the gospels reliable, historical documents? /? John Warwick Montgomery; 3. Do the gospel writers speak the truth? /? Simon Greenleaf; 4. Do the gospel writers complement each other? /? Robert Anderson; 5. Is the Jesus story found outside the New Testament? /? Lord Hailsham; 6. What is the real evidence for the resurrection? /? Norman Anderson; 7. It may be true, but does it work? /? Lionel Luckhoo; 8. What should our response be to Jesus? /? Frank Morison. Appendices 1-3. Ross Clifford is a Baptist pastor. Mixed Blessings: John Paul II and the Church of the Eighties, Collins, Paul
45 Collins, Paul Mixed Blessings: John Paul II and the Church of the Eighties
Australia Penguin 1987 014009752X / 9780140097528 Reprint Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
276 indexed pages. No world-wide institution has changed as quickly and as radically as the Roman Catholic Church in recent years, yet it remains a paradox. Many people see it as a reactionary force while others experience it as a powerful movement towards spiritual renewal and radical social and political change. With wide experience of the full-time ministry, Paul Collins explains the extraordinary change that has swept over the Church and the important issues facing the Australian Catholic community now. This is a hook for everyone who seeks to understand how an institution that has shaped our culture is wrestling to adjust to the future. The author has a master’s degree in theology from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in history from the Australian National University (ANU). He has taught church history and theology in Australia, the United States and Pacific countries and has worked as a Catholic parish priest in Sydney and Hobart. In March 2001 he resigned from his role as a Catholic priest due to a dispute with the Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith over this book. The Vatican’s investigation centred on this 1997 book "Papal Power" which was said to imply that "a true and binding revelation" does not exist; to deny that the Church of Christ is identified with the Catholic Church and to deny the doctrine of papal infallibility. Collins was further accused of holding the view that a teaching, to be considered church doctrine, must be approved through the sensus fidelium - the "sense of the people" - as well as by bishops and theologians. In explaining his resignation, Collins cited the increasing rigidity and sectarianism of the Vatican, stating that the August 2000 declaration Dominus Jesus expressed "a profoundly anti-ecumenical spirit at odds with the sense of God’s grace permeating the whole cosmos". First page carrires a dedication to Eddie which seems to be from the author.

No Set Agenda: Australia's Catholic Church faces an uncertain Future, Collins, Paul
46 Collins, Paul No Set Agenda: Australia's Catholic Church faces an uncertain Future
Australia David Lovell Pub 1991 1863550208 / 9781863550208 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
220 indexed pages. Includes bibliographical references. The Catholic church is now the largest religious body in Australia. This book examines how contemporary Catholicism is performing in Australia today. It takes a sympathetic but relentless look at the critical issues that face Catholics and outlines an agenda for the church for the 1990s. It challenges both the church and Catholics to emerge from a comfortable sub-culture to confront these issues head on. No Set Agenda also looks to the future to issues such as immigration, the environment and resource development, as well as to the development of a Catholic identity, a deeper spirituality and a more elegant and tasteful worship. Paul Collins challenges our thinking about the state of Catholicism in Australia. He has fresh and invigorating things to say about a range of issues - from Sunday Mass and church schools to the media and the bishops; from matters of conscience and social justice to music and the universities. Paul Collins is a Catholic priest and as such writes with an insider's knowledge and affection.

When the Lord Speaks to the Heart, Courtois, Gaston
48 Courtois, Gaston When the Lord Speaks to the Heart
Canada Editions Paulines 1983 289039929X / 9782890399297 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
160 pages. All who have had the chance to meet Father Gaston Courtois at retreats, meetings, conferences, formation sessions or in the confessional, all who have found support from his impressive spirituality and humility about his works, will find in these intimate notes the ideas which the author cherished and developed with a passion which no one can resist. His writings are the reward of meaningful contemplation and reflection. In the last years of his life he frequented the chapel more often and for longer periods of time, with a notebook on his knee, praying, so to speak, with his pen to Christ, writing in his own words, "Your will be done." Father Courtois expressed often the desire for a great number of prayer leaders. He prayed often for this intention, which he often addressed to Our Lady as, "the first leader of prayer." His desire seems appealing today. Prayer groups and "schools of prayer" are springing up to guide those who wish to mature in the greatest of disciplines, the open communication between man and God. Father Gaston Courtois (1897-1970) was born in Paris. He served as an officer during World War I and was seriously wounded in action in 1917. After the war he entered the renowned Seminary of Saint Sulpice and in 1921 joined the Sons of Charity. Ordained in 1925 he served for several years as a parish priest and during that period collaborated in the foundation of the French J.O.C. (Young Christian Workers). This was the beginning of a chain of apostolic activities in which he would play a role of leadership»,directorship or editorship: in the fields of Catholic Action. Education and the administration of his own religious institute. His studies took him to the Sorbonne. and the Institut Catholique of Paris. His work was honored by the French Government, the French Academy and the University of Montreal. name in the first page.

Jacques Ellul, the Major Works, Cranmer, John; Ellul, Jacques
50 Cranmer, John; Ellul, Jacques Jacques Ellul, the Major Works
Australia Hexagon Press 1980 0908063040 / 9780908063048 1st Edition Stapled Soft Cover Good 12mo
40 pages. Jacques Ellul stands against those who seek a moulding of the Christian message by the modern world. For Ellul, modern man does not call the gospel into question, but the biblical revelation confronts modern man as an individual, challenging the foundation of his existence. He believes that Christians have a God-given gift of being able to discern the times, and should speak to their society in a similar manner as the Hebrew prophets to their society, warning of dangerous consequences of trends discernable in the present. He is one who seeks to speak a word from God that takes into account the mindset of the modern (technological) world. As a sociologist, Ellul stands in the tradition of Tocqueville in seeing the essence of modernity in the rise of the centralised and rationalised state. With the publication of “Technological Society” Ellul was discovered by the world outside France as a penetrating social analyst of whose ability even Aldous Huxley stood in envy. Yet to view Ellul only as a social analyst is to remove the dynamic from his thinking, for at the centre Jacques Ellul is one who seeks to confront the modern world with the biblical revelation of God in Jesus Christ. He asks us to view his work in terms of counterpoint: his sociological works standing in partnership with his biblical and theological works. While he gives no detailed program, Ellul says that christians are the only ones who have a genuine hope and a genuine resource of strength to cope with the severe strain of going against the dominant direction of the modern world of technological mass man. Underlining in some text.

The Love Letters: Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi Meet Pope Francis, Davis, Bruce
52 Davis, Bruce The Love Letters: Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi Meet Pope Francis
USA Grave Distractions Publications 2014 0991349741 / 9780991349746 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
100 pages. To understand the impact of Pope Francis and his inspiration to the Catholic Church, indeed people of all religions, we turn to the two saints who are his inspiration, Saint Francis and Saint Clare of Assisi and the great love of their spirituality. Eight hundred years ago when the Church had fallen into scandal and hard times, Saint Francis and Saint Clare lifted the Church to new life, new beginnings. Today the Church suffers the same crises. Today Pope Francis is looking at the heart full spirituality of Saint Francis and Saint Clare to lift the Church with less pomp and ceremony and more embracing the poor and unwanted. The Love Letters is the love story of Francis and Clare and the challenge for Pope Francis and the world to discover the same love in our hearts, our neighbor, nature, and all creation. The Love Letters is historical fiction. What if Saint Francis and Saint Clare were to meet Pope Francis? What would be their thoughts, dreams and hopes for a new Church? The Love Letters is the mystical love discovered by two of the world's greatest mystics long ago asking who is the new Pope Francis? Can he rebuild the Church into a living Church, a church less concerned with rules and order and more about forgiveness and compassion? In the silence of our hearts, in giving to those in need, Saint Francis, Saint Clare, and Pope Francis offer a new vision for us all to become instruments of true peace and joy. Bruce Davis, Ph.D. has pursued the footsteps of Saint Francis and Saint Clare for many years. For twelve years he and his wife, Ruth, lived in Assisi, Italy the historic home of these remarkable saints. There they began the Assisi Retreat Center which was awarded one of the top ten meditation centers in the world by Travel Leisure Magazine and CNN. Recently, Bruce and Ruth opened Silent Stay, a new retreat center near Napa, California. Bruce is the author of several books including Monastery Without Walls, The Magical Child Within You, and Simple Peace-The Spiritual Life of Saint Francis of Assisi.

The Gift of Confession: 25 Benefits for You - a positive approach to the sacrament of Reconciliation, De Stoop, Michael
53 De Stoop, Michael The Gift of Confession: 25 Benefits for You - a positive approach to the sacrament of Reconciliation
Australia Connor Court Pub 2007 0980293650 / 9780980293654 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
iii + 153 indexed pages. Our consumer society has conditioned us to ask ourselves such things as, 'What do I get out of it? What is in it for me?' Rather than fight against this mentality, why not use it in our efforts to help people have a renewed interest in Confession? Surely the best way to help people appreciate this sacrament is to elucidate the many benefits we receive from it. To that end, this book focuses upon 25 striking things Confession affords. It demonstrates that Confession gives us much more than it takes away! Taking 'negative' things (sin) away is one thing for which this sacrament is well known, but how many people think of the Sacrament of reconciliation in terms of the 'positive' things it provides for us? It is informative and entertaining as it is illustrated with interesting analogies, true stories, Church teaching, quotes from the saints and answers to popular questions. 'Given the fall off in recent years it is refreshing to find a book that urges people to take up again the practice of confessing their sins. Readers will be moved and convinced by the real spiritual benefits of Confession. These benefits go beyond the forgiveness of sins to the wider and perhaps, today, the more fundamental matter of reorienting ones life towards Christ. This is a book about God's unfailing mercy.' Most Rev B J Hickey, Archbishop of Perth 'At a time when the Sacrament of Penance needs to be re-discovered, this book focuses on the great gift of God's mercy in a way that will help many, especially perhaps the young, to see anew the power and beauty of what the Church offers in the name of Jesus.' Most Rev Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Canberra/Goulburn.

59 Dizdar, Drasko Sheer Grace: Living the Mystery of God
U.S.A. Paulist Pr 2008 0809145170 / 9780809145171 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
218 indexed pages about doing liturgy as theology, and about a way of doing theology through liturgy as something that God does; and invites us to participate in as fully, consciously and actively as we are able. Liturgical renewal is the gift of the ever ancient, ever new Spirit that God offers us, not our task of rubric reform; and liturgical restoration is about God giving us back our divine destiny as creatures who are being ever created anew in the image and likeness of God, not an escape into a dead past. Sheer Grace tries to show not just the "link between" but the indissolubility of theology, liturgy, and spirituality; and it does so by grounding it in a radical tradition of liturgy as transformation that has its roots in the scriptures and the lived liturgical experience of our biblical and ecclesial ancestors. At the same time it looks to the present experience of Christians who feel a deep and largely unmet need for that same kind of transforming experience that liturgy can be; and it looks to the future with hope as a gift of "sheer grace," as something only God can and does give, and not as something we can manufacture by our own efforts at renewal or restoration.
