Nature, Reality, and the Sacred: The Nexus of Science and Religion, Gilkey, Langdon
21 Gilkey, Langdon Nature, Reality, and the Sacred: The Nexus of Science and Religion
U.S.A. Fortress Pr 1993 0800627547 / 9780800627546 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
266 indexed pages. Two partial apprehensions of nature have been vying for dominance in this century: religious (void of any influence from science) and scientific (unable to admit any reality beyond the empirical). Both views have led to the exploitation of nature - and the scientific may prove even more devastating. The fault, Gilkey argues, lies not in the scientific knowledge of nature but in the assumed philosophy of science that accompanies most scientific and technological practice. Scientific knowing needs to be critiqued and brought into relationship with other complementary ways of knowing. Once again, Gilkey expands our vision and deepens our insight. He has given us a classic contribution to a theology of nature that emerges from a careful conversation with the natural sciences. Gilkey’s mature venture into the waters of science-theology is a sensitive appeal to discern the religious dimension that underlies science and the science that religion must have. His strident thoughts seek to steer through the reefs of both scientism and creationism.

There is More to the Secret: An Examination of Rhonda Byrne's Bestselling Book "The Secret", Gungor, Ed
23 Gungor, Ed There is More to the Secret: An Examination of Rhonda Byrne's Bestselling Book "The Secret"
U.S.A. Thomas Nelson 2007 0849919789 / 9780849919787 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
133 pages. Is it possible to believe in both God and the "law of attraction"? Isn't this all just some New Age, "power of the mind" thing? If the l"aw of attraction" works, why isn't it in the Bible - or is it? Questions like these are being asked by people around the world after reading the best-selling book, "The Secret." According to the l"aw of" a"ttraction," you can have virtually anything desired if your mind is trained to put out continual thoughts to attract it into your life. In this deeply compelling work, Ed Gungor seeks to establish a more complete and accurate representation of the power of the mind by explaining the role that God plays in the equation. This book is not written to attack but rather to examine what the author believes is misguided advice while still speaking to the heart-felt need that is causing so many to explore this ancient practice. Some of his views may surprise you. There is more to the story that must be told.

A History of Christian Spirituality: An Analytical Introduction, Holmes, Urban T. III
27 Holmes, Urban T. III A History of Christian Spirituality: An Analytical Introduction
USA Seabury Press 1980 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
166 indexed pages. This modern classic explores the key concepts and people who have shaped our Christian spiritual heritage. At the time it was first published, the author wrote, This book is the result of finding nothing to recommend to my students as an introduction to the wide variety and great richness of the Christian spiritual experience. The texts available are either too detailed, too unbalanced, or both. This situation remains the same today, more than twenty years later. Now this concise and very readable introduction to Christian spirituality is available for a new generation of readers. Holmes begins with the Jewish antecedents, and proceeds through the New Testament period, monasticism, the Middle Ages, Byzantine spirituality, and the modern period. He ends his overview with key contemporary figures such as Simone Weil, Thomas Merton, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Brief bibliographies of the books written by each notable figure are included for those who wish to read more extensively. A History of Christian Spirituality is the perfect book for introductory classes at the M. Div. level, for diaconate programs, lay people or parish study classes of all Christian denominations, and for any reference collection. This is a unique and invaluable learning tool and reference for readers, students, or teachers who want a quick explanation of the significance of a person or idea, or who are interested in a broad overview of the entire field. Urban Tigner Holmes, III (1930-1981) was an Episcopal priest, theologian, and academic. Creases in the lower front edges.

Thai Law: Buddhist Law - Essays on the Legal History of Thailand, Laos and Burma, Huxley, Andrew
29 Huxley, Andrew Thai Law: Buddhist Law - Essays on the Legal History of Thailand, Laos and Burma
Thailand Orchid Press 1996 9748299864 / 9789748299860 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
211 pages. Between 1880 and 1930 Thai law was modernised. Using the French civil code as their model, the kings of Siam recast traditional Thai law into western form. This book describes Thai law as it was before 1880. For at least five hundred years - perhaps nearer a thousand years - the Thai have used written law books. During the last twenty years, Thai scholars have systematically searched for these law books through the book chests of monasteries throughout the country. As a result, there are now ten times as many legal manuscripts available for study compared to the number accessible twenty years ago. In this book six experts on history and law describe the new discoveries and assess how far our view of traditional Thai law has to change. The essays have a regional focus, dealing with the Northern Thai traditions of Lanna, the provincial cities of central Thailand, the Southern Kingdom based on Nakhon Si Thammarat, the law texts of Laos, the new discoveries in Burma and finally with Bangkok and its famous Three Seals Code. A number of questions arise; some are answered, others will provoke a lively debate in the future. How should we describe the Thai legal tradition? Did the Thais bring it with them into Southeast Asia? Or is it part of the Buddhist intellectual traditions that reached Thailand from across the Bay of Bengal? Is it enough to call traditional Thai law 'pre-modern', or should the different regions be graded into degrees of pre-modernity? Ex-library markings.

The Challenge of Secularisation, Ireland, Rowan
30 Ireland, Rowan The Challenge of Secularisation
Australia Collins Dove 1988 0859247228 / 9780859247221 1st Edition Stapled Soft Cover Very Good 8vo
52 pages. This book surveys the literature of religious sociology, bringing its insights to bear on pastoral questions facing the Churches in Australia. He confronts such questions as: Is secularisalion a mere myth? If there is such a process, is it unstoppable, or can it be reversed? Was there ever a Golden Age of religion from which we have fallen away? Dr. Ireland helpfully distinguishes various meanings of ‘secularisation’ before probing the phenomenon itself. He then suggests points of dialogue between modernisation and religion. Both experience and scholarship play major roles in this study. Ireland notes that ‘in the lifetime of Australians now in their forties, religion has lost its function in shaping national and personal identity’. He cites evidence of ‘a lack of sensibility toward the transcendant sacred’, and of private feeling replacing public responsibility as a basis for decision-making. Finally, new strategies for the churches are proposed - to prevent their becoming simply public relations agencies for a bland Golden Rule, or splintering into earnest small sects. He argues growth in communal life is essential.

So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore: An Unexpected Journey, Jacobsen, Wayne; Coleman, Dave
31 Jacobsen, Wayne; Coleman, Dave So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore: An Unexpected Journey
USA Windblown Media 2006 0964729229 / 9780964729223 Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
178 pages (last 12 are unpaged) about the authors and with an appendix. Jake Colsen, an overworked and disillusioned pastor, happens into a stranger who bears an uncanny resemblance (in manner) to the apostle John. A number of encounters with John as well as a family crisis lead Jake to a new understanding of what his life should be like: one filled with faith bolstered by a steady, close relationship with the God of the universe. Facing his own disappointment with Christianity, Jake must forsake the habits that have made his faith rote and rediscover the love that captured his heart when he first believed. Compelling and intensely personal, SO YOU DON'T WANT TO GO TO CHURCH ANYMORE relates a man's rebirth from performance-based Christianity to a loving friendship with Christ that affects all he does, thinks, and says. As John tells Jake, "There is nothing the Father desires for you more than that you fall squarely in the lap of his love and never move from that place for the rest of your life."

The Religions of the Oppressed: A Study of Modern Messianic Cults, Lanternari, Vittorio
36 Lanternari, Vittorio The Religions of the Oppressed: A Study of Modern Messianic Cults
USA Mentor 1965 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 16mo
286 indexed pages. This author prefers the historical approach by means of which it is possible to explain the religious phenomenon and therefore to justify it. To justify a religious movement means to explain its nature, its function, and its genesis as well as its internal and external dynamics due, respectively, to factors inherent in the culture and to the impact from other cultures and external forces. This author's approach is based on the concept that it is not possible to envision an authentic history of religion outside the broad scope of the culture by which it is encompassed. This is a book of religious history, planned as a study of the relationship between religious and secular life as it develops within the general pattern of a civilization. A religious phenomenon may be explained only in so far as it is possible to trace its historical origin and development and to analyze it systematically in relation to concrete secular conditions.

A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century: Shaikh Ahmad al-Alawi, Lings, Martin
37 Lings, Martin A Sufi Saint of the Twentieth Century: Shaikh Ahmad al-Alawi
UK Islamic Texts Society 2001 0946621500 / 9780946621507 Reprint Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
242 indexed pages including b/w illustrations. 'Almost a prerequisite for any serious study of Sufism in European languages': this was the verdict of Seyyed Hossein Nasr in his review of the first edition of the book. According to the Journal of Near Eastern Studies, it is 'one of the most thorough and intimately engaging books on Sufism to be produced by a Western scholar'. Certainly there is nothing second-hand about it. The author lets Sufis speak for themselves and, in a series of unusual and absorbing texts mainly translated from Arabic, he gives a vivid picture of life in a North African Sufi order. Against this background stands the unforgettable figure of the Algerian Shaikh who was head of the order from 1909 until his death in 1934. The last few chapters are mainly devoted to his writings, which include some penetrating aphorisms, and which end with a small anthology of his remarkable mystic poems.

A World of Difference: Islam and gender hierarchy in Turkey, Marcus, Julie
39 Marcus, Julie A World of Difference: Islam and gender hierarchy in Turkey
Australia Allen & Unwin 1992 1863732195 / 9781863732192 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo Signed by Author
x + 201 indexed pages. This book offers a new theoretical analysis of the relationship of religious beliefs to the structuring of gender hierarchies. Central to the book is an exploration of the politics of knowledge. The author maintains that history and the difference between cultures must take account of feminist critiques of knowledge which demonstrate that gender is the hidden factor essential to constructing a ‘racialised east and sexualised, eroticised orient’. An analysis of popular and scholarly travel writing illustrates how women and sexuality play a crucial role in the subordination of east to west. This theoretically sophisticated investigation of difference and the relations of power that govern their representation is a valuable contribution to gender theory. Julie Marcus is Senior Curator of Social History at the National Museum of Australia, Canberra. She has taught anthropology at Macquarie University, the University of New South Wales and the'University of Adelaide. In addition to her work in Turkey she has worked in Alice Springs and has published a number of essays on race, gender and Australian culture.

Let Us Be Muslims, Mawdudi, Sayyid A.;
40 Mawdudi, Sayyid A.; Let Us Be Muslims
UK The Islamic Foundation 1985 0860371573 / 9780860371571 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
311 pages. Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi (l903-I979) one of the chief architects and leaders of the contemporary Islamic resurgence, is the most outstanding Islamic thinker and writer of our time. He devoted his entire life to expounding the meaning and message of Islam, inviting individuals to renew their commitment to their Creator, and to organizing a movement to establish Islam fully. In this struggle, he had to pass through all kinds of suffering: between I948 and I967, he was put behind bars on four occasions, spending a total of five years in different prisons of Pakistan; in I953, he was also sentenced to death by a Martial Law court for writing a ‘seditious’ pamphlet, this sentence later being commuted to life imprisonment. In I941, he founded Jama 'at lslami, of which he remained Amir (Chiel) until 1972 and which is one of the most prominent Islamic movements of our day. He authored more than a hundred works on Islam, both scholarly and popular, and his writings have been translated into forty languages. This is no ordinary book, says Khurram Murad in his long Introduction, for it has stirred more hearts and impelled more lives to change their course than any of his more erudite works. In these Friday congregational addresses, Sayyid Mawdudi expounds such familiar themes as Iman, Islam, the Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, Pilgrimage and Jihad. But, in an unusually beautiful, powerfully reasoned, eloquent and passionate. and yet simple and lucid style, he imparts to these very teachings, which seem so lifeless and irrelevant to life, that life and revolutionary ardour which they must have had when originally proclaimed and instituted. This he does mainly by restoring the vital links between them which, unfortunately, have long since been snapped in Muslim minds and lives — like links between life and Iman, Iman and actions, Jihad and Iman, Iman and history. Having been made whole again and placed at the centre of life, Iman, in Sayyid Mawdudi’s discourse, regains its power to change man and his world. Originally delivered more than four decades ago, in l938-39, before ordinary, almost illiterate farmers and servicemen, it has been meeting the real and great spiritual and cultural needs of Muslims and, despite the passage of time, retains its original freshness. This English version now attempts to bring Sayyid Mawdudi’s message with some of his original charm and vigour to millions of English-speaking Muslims, as well as to other Muslim languages. A book which should inspire every Muslim to think, and renew his commitment of Iman to Allah. KHURRAM MURAD was Director General of the Islamic Foundation. Born in I932, he studied civil engineering at the Universities of Karachi (BE I952) and Minnesota, USA (MS I958), and worked as a leading consulting engineer at Karachi, Dhaka, Tehran and Riyadh. Actively involved in the Islamic movement since I948, he was President, lslami Jamiat Talaba Pakistan (I951-52)
