Scarface, Armitage Trail
141 Armitage Trail Scarface
UK Import-L 2019 0747578613 / 9780747578611 1st British Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
187 pages. Tony Guarino grew up in the hard world of the bar and the poolroom, where every gangster was a hero and every cop an enemy. Only the tough made it. When he was just eighteen, he killed Al Spingola, gang boss and ruthless slayer, and was catapulted into notoriety and fame, but that was to be just the beginning of his rise to dominance. Maurice Coons, writing under the pseudonym Armitage Trail, gathered the elements for 'Scarface' when living in Chicago, where he became acquainted with many local Sicilian gangs. He prowled the murky streets of Chicago's gangland with a friend every night for two years, returning home to put to paper and write a book which somewhat documented his experiences. The resulted novel was 'Scarface', and it was worth the effort. Not just a thinly disguised biography of Al Capone, 'Scarface' is a gangster tale surprisingly rich with character and atmosphere. The story moves at a cracking pace, and from the machine guns, brutal deaths and beautiful gals emerges the tragic tale of one man's downfall from his ruthless ambition and love for friend and family. The source for the 1932 Howard Hawks picture, as well as the Brian de Palma remake.

Experiential psychotherapies in Australia, Armstrong, Dick; Boas, Phill (editors)
144 Armstrong, Dick; Boas, Phill (editors) Experiential psychotherapies in Australia
Australia PIT Pub 1980 0949833042 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 8vo
197 pages.Includes bibliographical references. This book highlights the present state of experiential therapies in Australia. These therapies, we believe, will continue to in?uence psychotherapy, professional training and society at large. However, with the progressive move towards specialization, there is a real danger of fragmentation, resulting in technical excellence with little or no regard for the broad mainstream of third-force humanistic psychology. Hopefully, the organizations and institutes that are emerging to promote the various experiential therapies will be able to incorporate the humanistic values, which were of such importance in the early days of experiential therapies in Australia. Creation’s Cry: The Heart of Apostolic Passion, Atkin, Don
157 Atkin, Don Creation’s Cry: The Heart of Apostolic Passion
Don Atkin 1931527970 / 9781931527972 Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
224 pages. In a day when so many either ignore apostolic ministry, or others pervert its meaning, it is a joy to read and understand the big picture of what the Lord has purposed for His Church. There's so much rich wisdom Don conveys in "Creation's Cry". According to Steve Eastman, "Don Atkin began his journey with God in 1963. He was firmly entrenched in the church system. A few years later he migrated from sunny California to snowy, upstate New York. His story brought back memories of other families I had met in the church system, who experienced miraculous provision as they sold out to God and trusted Him to meet all their needs. But God is not static. Neither was He content to allow Don Atkins to camp out at his initial understanding of the Kingdom of God. Don ended up on the receiving end of two mentoring relationships that helped him move beyond the traditional paradigm of church. It seems much of the church is obsessed with saving souls, which it subsequently abandoned. The New Testament emphasizes discipling newly born believers. For Don, that came to include hosting long-time house guests, who caught the Christian life by watching Jesus live out His life through him and his family. Don is not a hierarchical guy. He sees apostles as wise master builders whose influence stems from their function, not a position. A man’s gifts make room for him, and people gifted to be apostles come to be recognized as such through the fruit in their lives. Don did not obey his mentors because they demanded it, but because he recognized God working through them. Mentoring is intended to be temporary, leading the disciple to where he can hear God for himself, no longer needing a constant intermediary. I would be less than honest if I said everything in the book blessed me. One part was disturbing because it illustrates a style of parenting in sharp contrast to my own. Don tells about a time when his daughter was arriving from school. He had always told her to come straight home. At 20 minutes past the deadline, Don went to look for her and found her talking to a boy. He sent her to her room until he had cooled off, went in to speak with her and accepted her apology. They he spanked her with a paddle. He says she took it well. In my opinion, what worked for Don and his daughter, would not work for the majority of families. A child who was spanked after being told she was forgiven would normally feel betrayed and resentful. Just as a disciple needs to be gradually given more responsibility before the end of a discipling relationship, I feel a child needs to grow in decision-making before reaching adulthood. Otherwise, he or she is not ready to accept adult responsibilities. If a daughter is old enough to be interested in boys, she is probably too old to spank. A more appropriate punishment would be a loss of privilege. Perhaps if Don had included his daughter’s age in the story, his actions would have been more understandable. I do not wish to belabor my one area of disagreement with a book I found to be otherwise sound. Don Atkins has a lot to offer in practical experience as he teaches on the apostolic. You will learn more from him than you would at most apostolic-prophetic conferences."

Telling the Truth About Aboriginal History, Attwood, Bain
159 Attwood, Bain Telling the Truth About Aboriginal History
Australia Allen & Unwin 2005 1741145775 / 9781741145779 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
264 indexed pages. Genuinely good Australian history is under serious attack. This book is a brilliant battlefield analysis. Once upon a time historical controversies were debated among a small circle of academic historians. Today they are the subject of intense 'history wars' fought out in parliament, court rooms, museums, newspapers, cafes and blog sites. Bain Attwood takes us to the heart of the conflict about the Aboriginal past in Australia. He tracks the growing popularity of history and weighs the consequences for the nature of historical knowledge and the authority of the historian. He asks why and how Aboriginal history has become central to Australian politics, culture and identity. He examines the work of historical 'revisionists' and tests their promise of historical truth. Finally, Attwood ponders how the traumatic history of frontier conflict might better be remembered - and mourned - and why telling the truth about history matters for the nation and for all of us.
