101 Hellwig, Monika K. What Are the Theologians Saying Now? A Retrospective on Several Decades

170 indexed pages. Continuous change would now appear to be a permanent feature of Roman Catholicism. It was not always so, and as a result there is confusion for many Catholics: By skillfully selecting central themes, the author gives a comprehensive yet succinct account of the main theological advances as well as the most significant writers of the past three decades. She interprets clearly what is happening in the church today, yet she is not confrontational. Monika Hellwig's book will be helpful to all who have reflective interest in their religious faith and a desire to understand broader patterns within the church. It will give assurance to those who endeavoured to put into practice the spirit of Vatican ll and may also interest conservatives who have reacted negatively to modern theology. Monika Hellwig is Professor of Theology at Georgetown University. She has lectured widely in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and South America. She has written more than a dozen books and numerous journal articles.

A History of Christian Spirituality: An Analytical Introduction, Holmes, Urban T. III
106 Holmes, Urban T. III A History of Christian Spirituality: An Analytical Introduction
USA Seabury Press 1980 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
166 indexed pages. This modern classic explores the key concepts and people who have shaped our Christian spiritual heritage. At the time it was first published, the author wrote, This book is the result of finding nothing to recommend to my students as an introduction to the wide variety and great richness of the Christian spiritual experience. The texts available are either too detailed, too unbalanced, or both. This situation remains the same today, more than twenty years later. Now this concise and very readable introduction to Christian spirituality is available for a new generation of readers. Holmes begins with the Jewish antecedents, and proceeds through the New Testament period, monasticism, the Middle Ages, Byzantine spirituality, and the modern period. He ends his overview with key contemporary figures such as Simone Weil, Thomas Merton, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Brief bibliographies of the books written by each notable figure are included for those who wish to read more extensively. A History of Christian Spirituality is the perfect book for introductory classes at the M. Div. level, for diaconate programs, lay people or parish study classes of all Christian denominations, and for any reference collection. This is a unique and invaluable learning tool and reference for readers, students, or teachers who want a quick explanation of the significance of a person or idea, or who are interested in a broad overview of the entire field. Urban Tigner Holmes, III (1930-1981) was an Episcopal priest, theologian, and academic. Creases in the lower front edges.

No Way Out? Pastoral Care of the Divorced & Remarried, Häring, Bernhard
113 Häring, Bernhard No Way Out? Pastoral Care of the Divorced & Remarried
UK St Paul Pub 1989 085439317X / 9780854393176 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
90 pages. Are divorced and remarried couples to be considered cut off from the Church? This book tries to give a fresh answer to an old question, not so much from a legalistic point of view as from the human dimension of compassion and understanding. The author offers some possible "ways out" in extreme cases - "ways" which are in keeping with the tradition of both the Eastern and Western Churches, such as the principle of oikonomia (economy) and epikeia and, above all, the mercy of God made visible in Christ "who came not to condemn but to save". What prompted Father Haring to write this book was the statement made by the Synod of Bishops in 1980 expressing concern for the divorced and remarried. John Paul ll referred to this statement - thus fully endorsing it - in his apostolic exhortation, Familiaris consortio (§84): "Together with the Synod, l earnestly call upon pastors and the whole community of the faithful, to help the [ remarried ] divorced, and with solicitous care to make sure that they do not consider themselves separated from the Church." The pastoral concern highlighted in this book will undoubtedly be an incentive to a greater effort for a ministry of love and compassion. BERNARD HARING, now retired after fifty years in the active ministry, is considered one of the most outstanding moral theologian of the RC Church. He is the author of several books, some of which have been published in English by St Paul Publications.

The Challenge of Secularisation, Ireland, Rowan
114 Ireland, Rowan The Challenge of Secularisation
Australia Collins Dove 1988 0859247228 / 9780859247221 1st Edition Stapled Soft Cover Very Good 8vo
52 pages. This book surveys the literature of religious sociology, bringing its insights to bear on pastoral questions facing the Churches in Australia. He confronts such questions as: Is secularisalion a mere myth? If there is such a process, is it unstoppable, or can it be reversed? Was there ever a Golden Age of religion from which we have fallen away? Dr. Ireland helpfully distinguishes various meanings of ‘secularisation’ before probing the phenomenon itself. He then suggests points of dialogue between modernisation and religion. Both experience and scholarship play major roles in this study. Ireland notes that ‘in the lifetime of Australians now in their forties, religion has lost its function in shaping national and personal identity’. He cites evidence of ‘a lack of sensibility toward the transcendant sacred’, and of private feeling replacing public responsibility as a basis for decision-making. Finally, new strategies for the churches are proposed - to prevent their becoming simply public relations agencies for a bland Golden Rule, or splintering into earnest small sects. He argues growth in communal life is essential.

UK Monarch Books 2012 0857211994 / 9780857211996 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
141 pages. In the months before Isaac's birth, his father was in prison once again. His mother was forced into having an abortion, though seven months pregnant, because she was carrying the child of an enemy of the state. After desperate prayer, the night before she was due to go into hospital for the operation, she miraculously gave birth. Isaac met his father for the first time at the age of four. Brother Yun was constantly on the run, and his mother had to work to feed the family, so his grandmother cared for him. One day his mother was also arrested. Isaac and his sister were swiftly taken to another town by local Christians, where they registered at a school under false names. The family finally managed to flee to Burma, Thailand and ultimately Germany. As he grew up, what should Isaac do? Isaac's mother had prayed that God would not call her son to be an evangelist - but his father had dedicated him to God. Isaac, now in his twenties, has embraced the call to be a pastor.
