Australia 21st Century Business Pub 2002 0958591857 / 9780958591850 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
120 pages. This book is an Owner’s Manual for the rest of your life. Though the contributors are diverse, they are united by proven success and by a common theme. The theme is leadership. The common assumption is that while there are men and women who were seemingly born to lead, the vast majority of leaders reach their positions of eminence by applying techniques and skills which can be learned. The unifying factor in the diversity of the chapters is that there is always room at the top. Whether it is how to organise and so take charge of your life - make the most of that most precious of all commodities, time -or the nuts and bolts Ways of motivating others to willingly do what you wish, this book shows how to do it.

I'm Not Scared, Ammaniti, Niccolo
3 Ammaniti, Niccolo I'm Not Scared
Australia Text Publishing 2004 187700846X / 9781877008467 Reprint Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
215 pages. Translated from the Italian as: "Io non ho paura" which was first published by Giulio Einaudi Editore 2001. Winner of the prestigious 2001 Viareggio-Repaci Prize for Fiction. 1978, the hottest summer of the twentieth century. In a tiny Italian rural community, the adults shelter indoors while six children venture out on their bikes across the scorched, deserted countryside. In the midst of a sea of golden wheat, nine-year-old Michele Amitrano discovers a secret so momentous, so terrible, that he dare not tell anyone about it. To come to terms with what he finds, he will have to draw strength from his own imagination and sense of humanity. The reader witnesses a dual story: the one that is seen through Michele's eyes, and the tragedy involving the adults of this isolated hamlet. The result is an immensely powerful, lyrical and skilfully narrated novel, reminiscent of such classics as Stand By Me, To Kill a Mockingbird andThe Adventures of Tom Sawyer. A compelling and utterly absorbing read, I'm Not Scared reinforces Ammaniti's status as a major literary talent. Winner of the Viareggio-Repaci Prize for Literature. Niccolo Ammaniti has written two collections of short stories and six novels, four of which have been translated into English. He was the youngest ever winner of the Italian Viareggio Literary Prize for Fiction for his best-selling novel I'm Not Scared, which has been translated into thirty-five languages. The Crossroads received the Premio Strega Prize in 2007, Italy's equivalent to the Booker Prize. Review: This gripping American debut by Italian novelist Ammaniti captures well the vagaries of childhood: the shifting alliances, the casual betrayals and the mix of helplessness and earnest audacity with which children confront adult situations. Nine-year-old Michele Amitrano lives with his little sister, devoted mother and distant father in a rural Italian hamlet consisting of five dilapidated houses. In the sweltering summer of 1978, he and a group of his friends strike out on their bikes across the barren, scorched hills. While exploring an abandoned house, Michele discovers what he believes to be the dead body of a boy his own age. He cannot bring himself to tell his friends. When he tries to tell his father, the elder Amitrano brushes him off. Drawn back to the site, Michele discovers that the boy is not dead, but weak, disoriented and unable to account for his presence there. Michele brings the boy food and water and slowly learns more about him. The boy's story-which includes kidnapping and ransom-are too much for a nine-year-old to fathom and involve virtually every adult in the tiny community. Yet Michele decides that he must do something to help the boy. Part mystery, part morality play, the novel is written in simple, spare prose. The characters, particularly that of Michele, spring to life, and the story builds to a heart-stopping climax. Readers will find this accomplished work hard to put down and even harder to forget. (Feb.) Forecast: This novel was a bestseller in Italy, and while that doesn't usually translate into U.S. sales, Ammaniti's masterful use of suspense should help win him an American following. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information. 'Niccolo Ammaniti is the best novelist of his generation.' Il Giornale 'Ammaniti, one of the most admired figures on the Italian fiction scene...uses short sentences like the cracks of a whip and sharp paragraphs to make our hearts race and carry us to the edge of the abyss.' ABC, Spain 'Ammaniti is a born story-teller.' L'Unita 'Readers will find this accomplished work hard to put down and even harder to forget.' Publishers Weekly 'A tense, breathless book, written with self-confidence and vitality.' La Stampa 'Readable in one breath...moving, impressive, amazing. It reminds you of Italo Calvino, but a Calvino warmed by a humanity that is not afraid to roll around in the mud.' Panorama 'Confirms his extraordinary narrative talent, over which he superimposes an atmosphere of horror and marvel.' (Le Monde.)

You Can Make Music! It's Never Too Late to Start, Ben-Tovim, Atarah; Boyd, Douglas
10 Ben-Tovim, Atarah; Boyd, Douglas You Can Make Music! It's Never Too Late to Start
UK Victor Gollancz 1986 0575037830 / 9780575037830 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
143 pages. Have you ever wished that you could play a musical instrument? Maybe you started to learn but gave up in frustration, believing you were 'no good at music'. Perhaps you were told at school that you were 'unmusical' or 'tone deaf'. , Atarah Ben-Tovim and Douglas Boyd maintain that nearly every adult is musical enough to experience the deep satisfaction of playing an instrument. They stress that age is no hindrance tolearning and may even be a positive advantage. From a unique, ten years' research programme, they have developed a practical and reliable system of testing musical aptitude; and they have shown that most people who fail on an instrument do so because it was wrongly selected. This book enables adults to use the same step-by-step approach as the authors' previous and highly successful book, "The Right Instrument for Your Child". Charts and questionnaires tell you if now is the right time to begin learning an instrument. They also assess your latent musical ability; compare the advantages and disadvantages of different instruments; and, finally, reveal the instrument to which you are physically and temperamentally best suited and which most easily fits in with your current lifestyle. Having selected the right instrument you will need a wide range of information on purchasing it and finding a teacher. For this, the Beginners' Information Pack at the back of the book is an invaluable aid. Atarah Ben-Tovim and Douglas Boyd are the ideal pair to demystify music and to understand beginners’ problems. Atarah was a child progidy on the flute, while Douglas Boyd, a brilliant linguist, was a musical drop-out. He gave up the piano after three years of agony yet went on to spend 20 fulfilling years in the music business.

The Living Dead: Switched Off Zoned Out the Shocking Truth About Office Life, Bolchover, David
14 Bolchover, David The Living Dead: Switched Off Zoned Out the Shocking Truth About Office Life
United Kingdom Capstone Ltd 2005 184112656X / 9781841126562 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
150 indexed pages. Switch on the business news and you will probably be bombarded with yet more workplace experts telling you that everyone nowadays is grossly overworked, madly juggling their work-life balance until they finally keel over and die from the sheer stress of it all. We all know that's right, don't we? The real truth is that there are millions upon millions of people who are actively disengaged from their jobs, who spend months and years sitting in offices doing next to nothing, lost in the cracks of laughably inefficient and abysmally managed large organisations, their talents wasted and long forgotten. The Living Dead unmasks the myth of the workplace for the first time. It tells the truth. Not cloaked in humour, as in Dilbert and The Office, but in plain black and white. The Living Dead will captivate anyone anywhere in the world who has ever worked in a large office environment, or those who have a genuine desire to make people's working lives more productive and enjoyable. Here are some astonishing statistics about office life you probably never knew: 40 per cent of all casual drugs users in the US (people who use drugs just once a month) still choose to do it at work. 19.6 per cent of people who take drugs at work do so at their workstation. One in three mid-week visitors to the theme park Alton Towers has taken the day off work on a dishonest pretext. One in five US workers has had sex with a co-worker during work hours. Full sex, that is. 44 per cent of men and 35 per cent of women have had at least some sexual contact at work. One third of UK young professionals are hungover at least twice a week on working days. Two thirds admitted to having called in sick due to alcohol at least once in the previous month. 70 per cent of Internet porn sites are accessed during the 9 to 5 working day. More than half of the UK's 14.5 million pet owners say they would need between two and five days off work to grieve for a dead pet, while 10 per cent said they would need as much as two weeks. Monday (23 per cent) and Friday (25 per cent) are the days most commonly taken off sick by UK employees. Wednesday is the most rarely taken (8 per cent). UK doctors receive 9 million 'suspicious' or 'questionable' requests each year for sick notes. David Bolchover writes frequently on business and management issues for The Times and The Sunday Times as well as a number of other national newspapers and specialist publications. His first book, The 90-Minute Manager, outlines the lessons which business managers can learn from football managers. Previously, he was employed for several years in a large office. But now he wants to do something with his life.

U.S.A. Pocket Books 2005 1416511245 / 9781416511243 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
146 pages. This book offers a little light relief to the serious business of choosing a name for your baby. They are hard to escape, these days, the names that will cause numerous hardships in the playground. From the pop star wannabees (Courtney, Kylie, Britney), through locations (China, Brooklyn), passing by the shops (Timberland, Armani), along the hippy trail (Leaf, Sunset, Pagan) to those heading for trouble (Romeo, Chastity) the inspirations for baby names are countless. Parents looking for novelty might turn to famous sidekicks (Tonto, Garfunkel) or indeed dictators (Saddam, Benito) before settling on a name that sounds normal but is damn tricky to spell (Kaycee, Genni, Jho). Joe Borgenicht offers nearly 1500 names which absolutely, positively, cannot be used for a child. With the help of this book, readers are less likely to have their children resent them - well, okay, that's a stretch - but at least the parents can say they tried. U. K. Dorling Kindersley Pub 2001 0751312169 / 9780751312164 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
72 indexed pages including colour illustrations. The titles in the Essential Managers series provide accessible coverage of the key skills needed to succeed in business. They contain hints and tips, checklists, diagrams and photographs. If you find most accounting guides as complex as accounting itself, you'll love this itty-bitty guide, full of practical techniques that show you how to analyze financial statements, interpret financial data, and measure business performance. On every page, clear text and illustrations cover each aspect of accounting principles and practices, while simple checklists enable you to calculate ratios, identify creative accounting, and make sound financial decisions. And throughout, accessible charts and diagrams explore different options for financial planning and forecasting. Granted, if you're looking for specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do just fine. It's worth mentioning that the book is also part of reference publisher Dorling-Kindersley's Essential Managers series--20 itty-bitty books on business and career topics ranging from communication, leadership, and decision-making to the management of time, budgets, change, meetings, people, projects, and teams. Combining the For Dummies series' talent for breaking down a lot of information into bite-sized bits and sidebars with Dorling-Kindersley's signature, crisp graphics on a gleaming white backdrop, they don't represent the cutting edge of business thinking and they don't necessarily reflect any unique individual perspective. Instead, it's as though someone collated the best general thinking on these 20 topics and rolled them out into 72 brightly designed and easy-to-read pages, studded along the way with boxed tips, color shots of a multiracial cast of "coworkers" animatedly hashing through the workplace issues of the day, and a self-test of one's skills in the topic at hand on the last few pages of each volume. Again, they're not for anyone looking for in-depth or focused help on any of the subjects they cover, but they're perfect as a quickie general-interest reference... and let's face it, they're so cute, and look so smart in a neat little stack or row, that you'll probably want to buy a whole bunch to give to your entire department or staff.

Training Australians: A better way of Working, Business Council of Australia
20 Business Council of Australia Training Australians: A better way of Working
Australia Business Council of Australia 1990 0909865337 / 9780909865337 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 8vo
142 pages including b/w illustrations. 27 case studies from leading Australian organisations of their best training strategies. In its submission to the Commonwealth Government arising from the Ministerial paper "Industry Training in Australia", the Business Council undertook to collect and disseminate information on best practice in training in leading Australian companies. Companies from a wide spectrum of industrial and commercial sectors were invited to participate. Most of the companies which were asked to participate and contribute to this document did so. Companies which were asked to participate were not exclusively members of the Business Council. Companies were asked to describe their training approaches either for the whole of their company or for a particular operating division or subsidiary. The choice as to which training approach was to become their case study was determined by the company. Therefore, considerable variability exists between the description of each company’s training initiatives. Whenever a 'total' view of training was presented for the entire company, the case study often included statements concerning the company's mission, philosophy and overall human resource strategy. Whenever a company preferred to describe a particular initiative or the training involved in a particular subsidiary, the company often chose not to comment on philosophy but restricted its discussion to specific activities. Companies were provided with a suggested five-heading outline for their contribution: forces of change; human resource strategies; skills formation processes; skills formation effort; outcomes. Considerable latitude was given to the companies as to the manner in which they addressed this outline, and to the word length of their submissions. The result is a publication with great diversity and stands as one of the most detailed documentations of current training and development practices in Australia.
