1 Brink, William; Harris, Louis The Negro Revolution In America: What Negroes Want; Why and How They are Fighting; Whom They Support; What Whites Think of Them and Their Demands
USA Simon & Schuster 1964 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
251 pages. Here is an unprecedented book - the anatomy of a social revolution in full stride. It is based on the survey of Negro opinion made by Newsweek magazine in 1963, with additional material from a later poll of white attitudes toward Negroes. A nationwide sampling of Negroes across the country and on all social levels, lus 100 Negro leaders, were asked over 250 questions by interviewers who were, in almost all cases, themselves Negroes. From the answers emerges the first realistic, objective picture of: What it's like to be a Negro; What has triggered the present revolt against discrimination; How many Negroes are behind the revolt; Which leaders they support; Which methods they favor to get equal rights; How far they will go to achieve them; What their real feelings are toward whites; What their role will be in the 1964 election; What Negroes want most and when they expect to get it. Some of the findings were summarized in Newsweek, but much remarkable material could not be included for lack of space. All of it has now been incorporated, expanded and updated in this book. A special chapter presents white attitudes toward Negroes and their demands. Altogether, the book forms a unique and basic document of our times, a report that no future studies in the area of race relations can ignore. The authors are William Brink, Newsweek staff member who has covered many important civil rights stories in recent years, and Louis Harris, the political analyst and writer whose research organization conducted the original surveys.

One-dimensional Man, Marcuse, Herbert
11 Marcuse, Herbert One-dimensional Man
UK Abacus 1974 Reprint Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
200 pages. This classic of social criticism of the nineteen sixties, is a definitive study of people’s predicament in the late twentieth century. This book is a scathing and cogent attack on the evils of advanced technological societies, and on the consumer capitalism of the USA in particular - but also of the Soviet Union. The analysis it presents is impressive for the ferocity and power with which it reveals the pervasive alienation and un-freedom of modern technological society. Marcuse argues that in modern technological societies so-called ‘free’ institutions and ‘democratic liberties’ are used to repress individuality, disguise exploitation, and limit freedom and the scope of human experience. Society is controlled through the manipulation of false needs created by vested interests; the domination of bosses and owners is screened by their transfiguration into bureaucrats and corporations. Thus a new totalitarianism is created within which the last reservoir of revolutionary energy lies with ‘those who are outside the productive process’ - coloured minorities, the permanently unemployed and, above all, the students. Herbert Marcuse's analysis and image of a one-dimensional man in a one-dimensional society has shaped many young radicals' way. One-Dimensional Man quickly became one of the most important texts in about twenty years of radical political change.

Let Us Be Muslims, Mawdudi, Sayyid A.;
12 Mawdudi, Sayyid A.; Let Us Be Muslims
UK The Islamic Foundation 1985 0860371573 / 9780860371571 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
311 pages. Sayyid Abul A'la Maududi (l903-I979) one of the chief architects and leaders of the contemporary Islamic resurgence, is the most outstanding Islamic thinker and writer of our time. He devoted his entire life to expounding the meaning and message of Islam, inviting individuals to renew their commitment to their Creator, and to organizing a movement to establish Islam fully. In this struggle, he had to pass through all kinds of suffering: between I948 and I967, he was put behind bars on four occasions, spending a total of five years in different prisons of Pakistan; in I953, he was also sentenced to death by a Martial Law court for writing a ‘seditious’ pamphlet, this sentence later being commuted to life imprisonment. In I941, he founded Jama 'at lslami, of which he remained Amir (Chiel) until 1972 and which is one of the most prominent Islamic movements of our day. He authored more than a hundred works on Islam, both scholarly and popular, and his writings have been translated into forty languages. This is no ordinary book, says Khurram Murad in his long Introduction, for it has stirred more hearts and impelled more lives to change their course than any of his more erudite works. In these Friday congregational addresses, Sayyid Mawdudi expounds such familiar themes as Iman, Islam, the Prayer, Fasting, Almsgiving, Pilgrimage and Jihad. But, in an unusually beautiful, powerfully reasoned, eloquent and passionate. and yet simple and lucid style, he imparts to these very teachings, which seem so lifeless and irrelevant to life, that life and revolutionary ardour which they must have had when originally proclaimed and instituted. This he does mainly by restoring the vital links between them which, unfortunately, have long since been snapped in Muslim minds and lives — like links between life and Iman, Iman and actions, Jihad and Iman, Iman and history. Having been made whole again and placed at the centre of life, Iman, in Sayyid Mawdudi’s discourse, regains its power to change man and his world. Originally delivered more than four decades ago, in l938-39, before ordinary, almost illiterate farmers and servicemen, it has been meeting the real and great spiritual and cultural needs of Muslims and, despite the passage of time, retains its original freshness. This English version now attempts to bring Sayyid Mawdudi’s message with some of his original charm and vigour to millions of English-speaking Muslims, as well as to other Muslim languages. A book which should inspire every Muslim to think, and renew his commitment of Iman to Allah. KHURRAM MURAD was Director General of the Islamic Foundation. Born in I932, he studied civil engineering at the Universities of Karachi (BE I952) and Minnesota, USA (MS I958), and worked as a leading consulting engineer at Karachi, Dhaka, Tehran and Riyadh. Actively involved in the Islamic movement since I948, he was President, lslami Jamiat Talaba Pakistan (I951-52)
