Culture, Identity and Broadcasting in Ireland: local issues, global Perspectives
1 Culture, Identity and Broadcasting in Ireland: local issues, global Perspectives
Ireland Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's Universit 1991 0853894094 / 9780853894094 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
156 pages. Broadcasting plays a central role in promoting and defining notions of national and cultural identity. In Ireland, where identity and cultural tradition is an area of conflict and dispute, broadcasting plays this role in extremely difficult circumstances. However, the changing political configuration of Europe and the impact of new broadcasting technologies, as well as recent policy developments have profound implications for the relationship between broadcasting and notions of identity. This book records the proceedings of a symposium, sponsored by the Cultural Traditions Group and hosted by Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine, which looked at these questions in detail. In an introductory essay, ‘Inventions and Re-imaginings: Some thoughts on Broadcasting and Identity in Ireland‘, the conference organiser, Martin McLoone provides a challenging analysis of the historical context to these debates and offers his own thoughts on future developments. Martin McLoone is a Lecturer in Media Studies at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. His publications include Media Studies in Education (Dublin, 1983), and Television and Irish Society (edited with J. MacMahon; Dublin 1984).

140 pages. A CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY cruise to Singapore sounds like a recipe for long, lazy days, lots of sunshine, and lots of fun. Yet for six children from Perth - two girls and four boys - it is just the beginning of an unforgettable and ultimately terrifying adventure. it all starts when one of the boys, Simon Thompson, risks his own life to rescue a small Chinese child who has fallen overboard. ln gratitude, the child's father, a geologist for an oil company, invites Simon and the other children to stay with him and his family in Singapore for a month. During their visit, the children are allowed to visit Seeker Seven, an oil rig off the coast of Singapore. However, when the boys stay on the rig overnight, they discover by chance that all is not as it seems on the rig. A gang of criminals is at work there, carrying out its illegal activities under cover of darkness. A police search on the rig reveals nothing, but the gang is not content to let matters rest there. From then on the children are exposed to sinister scare tactics that nearly cost them their lives. The game of cat-and-mouse accelerates at a furious pace, and when a violent storm traps the children on the rig, it seems that they are finally at the mercy of the ruthless criminals. This well-written adventure novel for children in the 10-14 age group not only makes for compulsive reading; it also presents an accurate and fascinating picture of life on board an offshore oil rig. The agonising suspense of the last scenes, where the children face a seemingly hopeless situation, will grip the imagination of all young readers. DAFNE BIDWELL was born in Hampshire, England, in 1929, and in 1945 moved with her family to live in County Wicklow, Ireland. After secretarial college in Dublin she worked for several years as a librarian, and then in 1955 she joined the British Secret Service [M.l.6) in London. 246 pages including b/w illustrations. Ireland played the central role in maintaining European culture when the dark ages settled on Europe in the fifth century: as Rome was sacked by Visigoths and its empire collapsed, Ireland became 'the isle of saints and scholars' that enabled the classical and religious heritage to be saved. In his compelling and entertaining narrative, Thomas Cahill tells the story of how Irish monks and scrines copied the mauscripts of both pagan and Christian writers, including Homer and Aristotle, while libraries ont he continent were lost forever. Bringing the past and its characters to life, Cahill captures the sensibility of the unsung Irish who relaunched civilisation. Thomas Cahill is the co-author of A Literary Guide to Ireland, author of Jesus' Little Instruction Book and a publisher with a leading New York firm. He is married and has two children.

6 Carey, Gabrielle In my father's house
Australia Picador 1993 0330272942 / 9780330272940 Reprint Soft Cover Good 12mo
291 browning pages. 'A powerful and compassionate re-evaluation of our society and the meaning of life and death.' ANDREW KENNON, THE AGE. Gabrielle Carey left Australia to see the world at her father’s urging. In Ireland she found a powerful affinity with the religious and political culture. In a pueblo in Mexico she found love, a home and a new family. And while she was away, she also found her father. A brilliant, obsessive man, Alex Carey had been too preoccupied with causes to spend much time with his family, but while Gabrielle was overseas, their correspondence brought them close for the first time. It was Alex - the committed humanist and atheist - who understood her interest in Catholicism and native Indian religion; Alex who inspired her decision to settle in a Third World country. After the birth of her daughter Gabrielle travelled again: this time to retum to Australia to see her family. The day before she arrived, Alex Carey committed suicide. In this book is Gabrielle Carey’s attempt to find out why. Part eulogy, part accusation, it is a moving last letter from a loving daughter. The grief of Irish wakes, the celebration of Mexican vigils and the fear of Australian Anglo-Saxon funerals: In My Father's House is also an exploration of how different cultures deal with death. 'A remarkably moving and illuminating examination of the nature of faith, morality, grief and death.' GILES HUGO, THE HOBART MERCURY. Over 20mm extra postage charges may apply.

Ireland and Australia, Colm Kiernan
8 Colm Kiernan Ireland and Australia
Australia Angus & Robertson 1984 0207150087 / 9780207150081 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
85 pages. "Ireland and Australia" is a series of six lectures which were broadcast on Radio Telefis Eireann between August and October 1983. The intention is to have something in print by 1988, when the Australian bicentenary will be celebrated, so that the Irish contribution to Australian history will not be overlooked. The first lecture deals with the beginnings of settlement in Australia, when one third of the convicts transported were lrish. Lt. Colonel Con Costello argues that the Irish convicts sent to Australia were different from their British equivalents in several respects. In particular, most of them came from country regions whereas in industrialised England they mostly came from the cities. Dr David Fitzpatrick's lecture concentrates attention on the emigration of free lrishmen and women to Australia during the nineteenth century, proposing that they were very successful in coming to terms with the opportunities that existed in the newly-settled continent. Professor Geoffrey Bolton concentrated his attention on the massive immigration movement that followed the discovery of gold in Australia. The population of Australia doubled in less than ten years and the foundations were set of modern Australia. Professor Colm Kiernan, editor of the lectures, follows with a paper in which he proposes that Dr Daniel Mannix, Archbishop of Melbourne from 1917 to 1963, made the most significant impact of any Irishman who went to Australia. In particular, his campaign for state funding of private schools, though similar campaigns in America, Canada and New Zealand all failed, was remarkably successful in Australia, where it became law in 1964. Dr Brian Murphy shows how Ireland led the way in the movement for devolution of government within the Commonwealth, with Australia following behind at a more leisurely pace. The series is concluded by Dr John O'Brien’s paper, which proposes that the need for militant action by Irish migrants in Australia diminished as they were accepted into Australian society, as the definition of Australian nationalism was enlarged to include diversity and pluralism, to generate a 'New Australian' consciousness. There are small light stains in the cover.

Australia: Boom to Bust: The Great Australian Credit & Property Bubble, David, Lindsay
9 David, Lindsay Australia: Boom to Bust: The Great Australian Credit & Property Bubble
U.S.A. Lindsay David 2014 1497503868 / 9781497503861 1st Edition Soft Cover Good 12mo
227 pages. "How much longer can the China construction boom last?" "At the height of the Global Financial Crisis, the American banking system was too big to fail. Today, the Australian banking system is too big to save." Australia: Boom to Bust dives deeply into the plausible collapse of the "Three Pillars" of the Australian economy: Banks, Natural Resources and Real Estate. Lindsay David provides unique commentary on the true state of the Australian economy and identifies major defects in the structures of the Three Pillars. Toxic levels of private sector debt sponsored by Australia's largest banks has managed to flood already-inflated asset classes of the Pillars on the back of a once-in-a-lifetime construction boom and property bubble in China. Compelling data and research suggests that the Australian economy has lost touch with reality and has gambled away its banking system to propel the mining and property markets into unchartered waters. Powerful Australian property and banking pundits have successfully led Australians to believe that the unusually high cost of real estate is justified. The pundits tell us that Australia is simply "different." Pundits love to use the word "boom," but they rarely use the word "bust." When a country as a whole and its cities lack density alongside a median house price that is more than six times the median household income, there is only one word that can describe the true state of the Australian property sector-bubble. The domestic banking sector in Australia learned absolutely nothing from past economic downturns in Japan, America, Spain and Ireland. Unfortunately, it will suffer the same sad fate that its northern-hemisphere peers did, as history has a good track record of repeating itself. The warnings signs of a toxic Australian credit bubble could not be any clearer-they have simply been ignored.

Australia Liz De Grossan Pty 1983 0959182209 / 9780959182200 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
123 pages including b/w illustrations. Liz de Crossan is living testimony to her involvement in health and beauty. Now in her early thirties, she was named in the Australian Book of Lists this year as one of Australia’s ten most beautiful women. Liz was born in Ireland and came to Australia at the age of twelve, too late to lose the Irish lilt to her voice. At sixteen she began modelling and within two years was one of Australia’s top models. While Liz has briefly departed the beauty business for stints in Television as a producer and as a restaurateur, she came back to health and beauty as her career choice, qualifying for her Diploma in Advanced Beauty Therapy. Liz is known for her outspoken views on health and vitality and this programme has been devised because she grew tired of the nonsense and the stupid promises so much of the beauty business was making. Nobody gets beautiful or healthy by dipping a forefinger into a jar of cream or by playfully waving your arms and legs around for a couple of minutes every day. Good diet and some hard work with your body is essential, and the creams and the lotions you use you should fully understand." she says emphatically. This little book contains an entire exercise programme using the L’il Trimmer Portable Exerciser but it doesn’t stop there. Diet is included, with recipes that work but don’t taste like a plate of cardboard. Liz even includes a section on Sexercising and the benefits of a healthy sex life. She explains how you can give yourself a facelift without surgery, goes into proper long term hair-care which includes her famous Daily Hair Cocktail", the way to use water and vitamins to retard aging and how to recognise and avoid a short term diet that may actually harm you. As Liz puts it: With a woman it’s thighs to bust that becomes the hang-up. Legs stay good long after the mid section has given up. My programme concentrates on slimming, firming, maintaining and shaping the flabby parts of the female body.

The Social Justice Agenda: Justice, Ecology, Power and the Church, Doust, Jon
12 Doust, Jon The Social Justice Agenda: Justice, Ecology, Power and the Church
Australia Collins Dove 1991 0859249751 / 9780859249751 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
201 indexed pages. There have been major developments in the spirituality, theology and teaching of the Churches on social issues during the past generation. This book is an attempt to meet the need for a general introduction to the topic of justice-and-peace as it has emerged for the Christian Churches in recent years. The emphasis is on the role that can be played by the institutional Church in responding to social justice issues. Beginning with a general account of the major issues of social justice which confront the Christian today, the author then summarizes what the Churches have to say about these issues. After exploring various ways in which Christians and the Churches can commit themselves to the promotion of justice in society, the author examines the crucial contribution which can be made by the Churches to the search for alternatives, that is towards the building of a society and a world that is more just, more respectful of the earth, more sustainable and more participative. The book then discusses what is involved in the Church itself becoming more just. The key issue here is that the Church has power of various kinds and so it is necessary to examine how this power is to be used in ways that are truly just. The question of formation and the training for various kinds of special ministry in the Church is examined, and ways are explored in which commitment to the transformation of society and practical experience of community-building may be integrated with other aspects of formation. The author is a well-known facilitator, consultant, trainer, resource-person and author. For many years he devoted himself to working, in Ireland and overseas, with community groups, Church groups, and teams of all kinds, with a special emphasis on empowerment, community-building, and conflict-resolution.

Ballygullion, Doyle, Lynn
13 Doyle, Lynn Ballygullion
Ireland Blackstaff Press 1976 0856401099 / 9780856401091 Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
110 pages. This collection originally published in Dublin, Maunsel, 1908. This new edition will introduce one of Ireland’s best-loved books to a new generation of readers. Set in and around a small country town, the book is in the form of stories told about his friends and neighbours by Pat Murphy, one of the local characters. To give more than the merest glimpse of any of the tales would be to spoil the book - but just wait till you read the saga of the Ballygullion Creamery Society Limited; or about the repercussions when wee Mr Anthony, the worst shot in Ireland, killed a rare and valuable pet; or what happened when Michael’s mechanical leg went wrong in church; or the awful fate of the man who picked winning horses by eating special cheese. These are stories with a twinkle in their eye - and those who remember Leslie A Montgomery, their author, all say that as a person he was just like his books. His pen-name is typical of his sense of fun: he was in fact a County Down bank manager and hit upon the pseudonym for his writing career when he was in a grocer’s shop one day and saw a label marked ‘Linseed Oil’. It is said that in his job at the bank he met all sorts of people with all sorts of problems, and that some of the stories his clients told him provided him with the raw material for his delightful tales. It is also said that at one stage he started to train as a reporter and that he practised his shorthand by taking down the talk around the fireside. As a result his ear for dialect was extremely accurate, and this gives his stories their wonderful richness and vitality and their great good humour. This is a book that has been a classic since the day it was first published in 1908. Ballygullion, readers new and old will agree, is timeless in its appeal.

Whether it was being sent home from Ireland in disgrace during Australia's 2006 International Rules Series or his antics at the 2009 Brownlow Medal, there was usually a common denominator: alcohol. This fascinating biography charts Fevola’s rise to AFL greatness and his very public descent into disgrace.

143 pages. How the Finnegans Saved the Ship is set in 1913, the year after the Titanic sank. It is the story of the voyage to Australia that is made by the Finnegan children and their mother, who travelled in a boat as unlike the Titanic as is possible. This ship also hits an iceberg, although luckily it is saved. The journey they undertake is perilous, though, and the conditions and attitudes markedly very different from those of today. Added to this is the family's anticipation of going to a different country - and a country they know very little about and one that couldn't be more different from their beloved Ireland. What does make a family leave the country they love and travel to another? This book is based on a true story - there really was a Mary who travelled on a ship to Australia in 1913 that hit an iceberg, and Mary and her family really did help save the ship. 203 pages. Dr Earle Hackett (1921-2010) was an Australian pathologist and haematologist born in Cork, Ireland, son of a successful General Practitioner. His voice was well-known to listeners of ABC Radio’s popular series The Body Programme. Many people hearing him have thought: "I wish I could hear that again, or be able to read it!" This book contains some popular pieces from Earle Hackett’s -contributions to The Body Programme including those on bones, milk, skin, hands, wounds, surgery, aphrodisiacs, ageing and death. Radio is still the ideal medium for the raconteur, and also for the broadcaster with something serious to say. Earle Hackett combines the two. He is too Irish to be a gravely pompous doctor. Perhaps for the same reason, he is a diversionary talker - one who teaches human biological truths as he goes along. The outcome is fascinating medical conversation, which is now carried on into book form.

Australia Collins Dove 1988 0859247228 / 9780859247221 1st Edition Stapled Soft Cover Very Good 8vo
52 pages. This book surveys the literature of religious sociology, bringing its insights to bear on pastoral questions facing the Churches in Australia. He confronts such questions as: Is secularisalion a mere myth? If there is such a process, is it unstoppable, or can it be reversed? Was there ever a Golden Age of religion from which we have fallen away? Dr. Ireland helpfully distinguishes various meanings of ‘secularisation’ before probing the phenomenon itself. He then suggests points of dialogue between modernisation and religion. Both experience and scholarship play major roles in this study. Ireland notes that ‘in the lifetime of Australians now in their forties, religion has lost its function in shaping national and personal identity’. He cites evidence of ‘a lack of sensibility toward the transcendant sacred’, and of private feeling replacing public responsibility as a basis for decision-making. Finally, new strategies for the churches are proposed - to prevent their becoming simply public relations agencies for a bland Golden Rule, or splintering into earnest small sects. He argues growth in communal life is essential.
