The Bible and Postmodern Imagination, Brueggemann, Walter
2 Brueggemann, Walter The Bible and Postmodern Imagination
U. K. SCM Pr 1993 033400103X / 9780334001034 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
117 pages. It is widely affirmed that we now live in a new situation, a pluralistic, postmodern world. This situation is seen by many as a threat to traditional churches and their long established practices and patterns of belief, not least their interpretation of the Bible. Walter Brueggemann argues that this approach is far too pessimistic. Far from being a threat, our new siuation offers new opportunities, not least a chance to move beyonf the negativities of historical criticism. In support of this argument, Professor Brueggemann first outlines in more detail the present context as he sees it. Then he does the same for the themes of the Bible, seeing them as the picture of a world which is to be correlated with and set over against the modern world, providing a viable alternative infrastructure. The third and last chapter turns to specific texts with a focus on memory, covenant and hope. By moving from context to theme to text, Professor Brueggemann argues, the text can be given liberating power to transform, working in congregations who seek modes of practice faithful to the gospel.

1917: Red Banners, White Mantle, Carroll, Warren H.
3 Carroll, Warren H. 1917: Red Banners, White Mantle
U.S.A. Christendom Press 1981 0931888050 / 9780931888052 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
137 pagec including endnotes and bibliography. A captivating account that narrates, month by month, the events of 1917. This is popular Catholic history at its finest. The drama of the Great War and the Russian Revolution are juxtaposed with the spiritual dimension of the Age: the diabolism of Rasputin, the Apparition of the Virgin at Fatima, the malignancy of Lenin, the saintly courage of (the now blessed) Charles of Austria. Few standard histories have ever given such a high degree of consideration to the supernatural and the Christian interpretation of history as "1917" does.

A Study of Concrete and Formal Operations in School Mathematics: A Piagetian Viewpoint, Collis, K.F.
5 Collis, K.F. A Study of Concrete and Formal Operations in School Mathematics: A Piagetian Viewpoint
Australia Australian Council Educational Research (ACER) 1975 0855631260 / 9780855631260 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
204 indexed pages including diagrams, graphs, tables and bibliography. The work described in this book is of interest to three groups of professional people: teachers; especially teachers of mathematics, teacher educators, and psychologists. It presents an interpretation of Piaget's formulation of the concrete-operational to formal-operational level of the cognitive functioning continuum by using material from elementary mathematics. The proposal is made that concrete-operational level reasoning can be distinguished from formal-operational by its dependence on empirical cues, the movement up the continuum being marked by a lessening dependence upon empirical support. Reality for a child in this context is seen as being bound up with the notion of closure or uniqueness which, in its turn, is related to both the kind of elements operated upon, and the number and type of operations involved.

Australia Harcourt Brace 1994 0729512339 / 9780729512336 Reprint Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
321 indexed pages. Some pencilled activity. The term 'assessment' is usually paired with the term 'evaluation'. There is much fuzziness in the distinction between these two terms. Some people define assessment as the collection of information about a student and evaluation as the interpretation of that information. Others see assessment as the process of gathering evidence and making judgments about students' needs, strengths, abilities and achievements, while evaluation is seen as the process of gathering evidence and making judgments about the effectiveness of teaching programs, policies and procedures. Others don't bother to make such distinctions and often use the terms interchangeably. The authors have usually defined the terms in their own way if they felt it to be important. Generally, however, no fine distinction has been made as assessment and evaluation are not seen as discrete activities. In order to understand this better, we need to look at the model of assessment being emphasised in this book.

Australia David Lovell Pub 2004 1863551069 / 9781863551069 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
202 pages. Davis McCaughey has become something of a legend in his own life time', says Peter Matheson, in his Preface to Fresh Words and Deeds,- as a scholar, teacher, preacher, as Master of Ormond College and as leader in church and state.' This book follows on from a first collection, Tradition and Dissent, which gathered together his words from his university and public life. This complementary collection focuses on his theological work. The title of this collection, Fresh Words and Deeds, draws upon a phrase from the United Church of Australia's foundational document, The Basis of Union. The Church, it insists, links 'fresh words and deeds' with the 'inheritance of literary, historical and scientific enquiry' and the 'faithful and scholarly interpretation' of Scripture that are the hallmarks of an informed faith. David McCaughey ensured that these were the characteristics of the educational, pastoral, social and political activities that he found himself involved in. This book has been published to mark the ninetienth birthday of the fifth Master of Ormond College. It is indeed an expression of gratitude for some fifty years of stimulating theological teaching and leadership. Published to mark the 90th birthday of the fifth Master of Ormond College, this is a selection of Davis McCaughey's theological writings and represents his scholarly initiatives and pastoral and prophetic insights.

His career spans twenty years, beginning with the revival of indigenous Australian theatre in the late 1960's. His work is characterised by great comic invention and an on-going interest in exploring the form of theatre. This is evident in early plays like White With Wire Wheels (1967) and Dimboola (1969), his wedding play which is the most-produced Australian play ever and which has also received a number of overseas productions. A Stretch of the Imagination (1972) and A Toast to»MeIba (1974) are also highly original, as is his adaptation of Gogol's The Overcoat(1978). For Hibberd, the theatre itself is a metaphor for life - best expressed in his monodramas, Mothballs (1981) and Lavender Bags (1983). Paul McGillick is theatre critic for The Australian Financial Review and a contributor to New Theatre Australia. He is also a playwright who has written plays and features for radio in particular. The French Revolution: Faith, Desire and Politics, Noah Shusterman
16 Noah Shusterman The French Revolution: Faith, Desire and Politics
UK Routledge 2014 0415660211 / 9780415660211 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
265 indexed pages. The French Revolution was one of the great events in world history, filled with remarkable characters and dramatic events. From its beginning in 1789, through the Reign of Terror in 1793-94, and through the ups and downs of the Directory era that followed, the Revolution showed humanity at its optimistic best and its violent worst; it transformed the lives of all who experienced it. The French Revolution: Faith, Desire, and Politics offers a fresh treatment of this perennially popular and hugely significant topic, introducing a bold interpretation of the Revolution that highlights the key role that religion and sexuality played in determining the shape of the Revolution. These were issues that occupied the minds and helped shape the actions of the women and men; from the pornographic pamphlets about Queen Marie-Antoinette to the puritanical morality of revolutionary leader Maximilien Robespierre, from the revolutionary catechisms that children learned, to the anathemas hurled on the Revolution from clandestine priests in the countryside. The people who lived through the French Revolution were surrounded by messages about gender, about sex, about religion and faith, concerns which did not exist outside of the events of the Revolution. This book is an essential resource for students of the French Revolution, History of Catholicism and Women and Gender. Table of Contents: Chapter 1: Religious Culture, Popular Culture: Life in Old Regime France Chapter 2: The Liberal Revolution of 1789 (Spring 1789-Spring 1790) Chapter 3: The Civil Constitution of the Clergy (Summer 1790-Winter 1791) Chapter 4: The King's Flight and the Decline of the French Monarchy (Summer 1791-Summer 1792) Chapter 5: The End of the Monarchy and the September Massacres (Summer 1792-Fall 1792) Chapter 6: The New French Republic and its Rivalries (Winter 1793-Summer 1793) Chapter 7: The Federalist Revolt, the Vendee, and the Start of the Terror (Summer 1793-Fall 1793) Chapter 8: The Reign of Terror (Winter 1794-Summer 1794) Chapter 9: The Fall of Robespierre and the Return to Normalcy (Fall 1794-1800)
