The Mass of the Early Christians, Aquilina, Mike
2 Aquilina, Mike The Mass of the Early Christians
USA Our Sunday Visitor 2007 1592763200 / 9781592763207 2nd Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
255 indexed pages. What did the first Christians believe about the Eucharist? How did they follow Jesus' command, "Do this in remembrance of me"? How did they celebrate the Lord's Day? What would they recognize in today's Mass? The answers may surprise you.In The Mass of the Early Christians, respected author, scholar, and television host Mike Aquilina reveals the Church's most ancient Eucharistic beliefs and practices. Using the words of the early Christians themselves -- from many documents and inscriptions -- Aquilina traces the history of the Mass from Jesus' lifetime through the fourth century. That the Mass stood at the center of the Church's life is evident in the Scriptures, as well as the earliest Christian sermons, letters, artwork, tombstones, and architecture. Even the pagans bore witness to the Mass in the records of their persecutions. These legacies from the early Church bear witness to the same worship Catholics know today: the altar, the priest, the chalice of wine, the bread, the Sign of the Cross ...the "Lord, have mercy" ...the "Holy, holy, holy" ...and the Communion.

Myth and Today's Consciousness, Berg, Ean
4 Berg, Ean Myth and Today's Consciousness
U. K. Coventure 1986 0904575306 / 9780904575309 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
112 pages. The image, or persona, to which it is expected one should conform in the new age, whether we call it Aquarian, post- Christian, nuclear, or space, is already revealing itself. It is both more individual and more generalized than its predecessor. The new tide runs strongly against the accidental differences that divide us, like class, nationality and religion, flowing rather with the essential qualities which unite us. Much light has been shed on the nature of these qualities by the twentieth century phenomenon of depth psychology. As a result, we are becoming more sceptical of the prophet and the hero and the guru who claims special knowledge or virtue - or at least we ought to be - and more aware of the shadow that contradicts and counteracts the aspirations of the idealist, more conscious and tolerant of the paradoxical multiplicity of human nature....The gods and their myths are mighty forces which grip the psyche; they are never more dangerous than when they are ignored, repressed or slighted. So this book is very much concerned with religion, Christianity, and the predecessors which it supplanted, and the present state of our relationship with the gods. This is a presumptuous aim which will rely heavily for its fulfillment on a subjective, intuitive assessment of the signs of the times. Particular emphasis will be placed on the need to become more conscious of the deities with whom we appear to be on bad terms. The book is apologetically polytheistic in the same way that the circle of the horoscope contains the signs and the planets and the Tarot deck its multitude of archetypal images. The Essence of Psychology: The Modern Beliefs Series, Birkett, Kirsten
5 Birkett, Kirsten The Essence of Psychology: The Modern Beliefs Series
Australia Matthias Media 1999 1876326131 / 9781876326135 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 16mo
93 pages. Offers a concise and readable summary of the essence of psychology- what it is, how it came about, and how it relates to the Christian world-view of the Bible. She also scrutinises the deeper assumptions of psychology, and asks how a Christian view of humanity and he mind relates to mental illness. As The New Millennium Dawns, the psychologist has replaced the clergyman as the dispenser of wisdom and peace in our confused and troubled world. When we are depressed or anxious or our marriages are in trouble, it is to psychology that we routinely turn for insight and therapy. It is hard to believe that psychology hardly existed a century ago, and that its prominent place in modern life has only come about in the last generation. In this short book, Dr Kirsten Birkett offers a concise and readable summary of the essence of psychology- what it is, how it came about, and how it relates to the Christian world-view of the Bible. Dr Birkett examines the various kinds of psychological therapies, and how these are based on different views of how the mind works. She also scrutinises the deeper assumptions of psychology, and asks how a Christian view of humanity and he mind relates to mental illness. This penetrating analysis of the insights and claims of psychology makes for fascinating reading. It will be of particular interest to those who struggle with their own mental health, as well as those who support them. The Modern Beliefs series is part of the work of the Matthias Centre for the Study of Modern Beliefs. The series aims to present a short summary and analysis of the beliefs and ideologies of our modern world from a Christian point of view. The Bible and Postmodern Imagination, Brueggemann, Walter
7 Brueggemann, Walter The Bible and Postmodern Imagination
U. K. SCM Pr 1993 033400103X / 9780334001034 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
117 pages. It is widely affirmed that we now live in a new situation, a pluralistic, postmodern world. This situation is seen by many as a threat to traditional churches and their long established practices and patterns of belief, not least their interpretation of the Bible. Walter Brueggemann argues that this approach is far too pessimistic. Far from being a threat, our new siuation offers new opportunities, not least a chance to move beyonf the negativities of historical criticism. In support of this argument, Professor Brueggemann first outlines in more detail the present context as he sees it. Then he does the same for the themes of the Bible, seeing them as the picture of a world which is to be correlated with and set over against the modern world, providing a viable alternative infrastructure. The third and last chapter turns to specific texts with a focus on memory, covenant and hope. By moving from context to theme to text, Professor Brueggemann argues, the text can be given liberating power to transform, working in congregations who seek modes of practice faithful to the gospel.

You Can Change: God's Transforming Power for Our Sinful Behaviour and Negative Emotions, Chester, Tim
10 Chester, Tim You Can Change: God's Transforming Power for Our Sinful Behaviour and Negative Emotions
U. K. Inter-Varsity Press 2009 Reprint Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
204 pages. Many books are written by experts. This book isn't one of them,' admits Tim Chester. 'It was written out of my own struggle to change. My long battle with particular issues set me searching the Bible as well as writings from the past. This book shares the amazing truths I discovered that now give me hope. For years I wondered if I'd ever overcome certain sins. And while I can't claim to have conquered sin - for no one ever can do - here are discoveries that have led to change in my life and in the lives of others.' You may be; a new Christian, struggling to change the habits of your former way of life; an older Christian, feeling you've plateaued: you grew quickly when you first believed but now your Christian life is much of a muchness; a Christian who's fallen into sin in a big way, wondering how you'll ever get back on track Other books describe how we should live, but this book outlines how we can change. It's about hope: the hope we have in Jesus, hope for forgiveness, and hope for real and lasting change. God promises liberating grace and transforming power to his people.

Unfinished Business: Confronting Issues of Christianity, Sexuality, and Politics, Clarke, Jennie; Ford, Ruth; Nobbs, Diana
11 Clarke, Jennie; Ford, Ruth; Nobbs, Diana Unfinished Business: Confronting Issues of Christianity, Sexuality, and Politics
Australia ASCM Publications 1985 0959285334 / 9780959285338 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 8vo
212 pages including b/w illustrations. A collection of articles, poems and personal re?ections that deals with God and human sexuality in an honest, loving and sometimes controversial way. It seeks to answer a need expressed by many people for resources of this kind, and in doing so disregards the boundaries of conformity and conservatism. Christians are no exception. Caught between the promised paradise of God’s love in and through each other and the oppressive hell of a fear-full exploitation, we are all ill at ease as sexual beings. So this book is important because in it we find Christians re?ecting on their experience of sexuality. We hear cries of pain and anger, celebrations of the sensual, questioning thought and uncertainties, stories of growth.

Their prayers on our behalf are more powerful than the prayers of anyone on earth because they are already in the presence of God. In the saints we see what goodness and holiness really mean. When the Lord Speaks to the Heart, Courtois, Gaston

Canada Editions Paulines 1983 289039929X / 9782890399297 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
160 pages. All who have had the chance to meet Father Gaston Courtois at retreats, meetings, conferences, formation sessions or in the confessional, all who have found support from his impressive spirituality and humility about his works, will find in these intimate notes the ideas which the author cherished and developed with a passion which no one can resist. His writings are the reward of meaningful contemplation and reflection. In the last years of his life he frequented the chapel more often and for longer periods of time, with a notebook on his knee, praying, so to speak, with his pen to Christ, writing in his own words, "Your will be done." Father Courtois expressed often the desire for a great number of prayer leaders. He prayed often for this intention, which he often addressed to Our Lady as, "the first leader of prayer." His desire seems appealing today. Prayer groups and "schools of prayer" are springing up to guide those who wish to mature in the greatest of disciplines, the open communication between man and God. Father Gaston Courtois (1897-1970) was born in Paris. He served as an officer during World War I and was seriously wounded in action in 1917. After the war he entered the renowned Seminary of Saint Sulpice and in 1921 joined the Sons of Charity. Ordained in 1925 he served for several years as a parish priest and during that period collaborated in the foundation of the French J.O.C. (Young Christian Workers). This was the beginning of a chain of apostolic activities in which he would play a role of leadership»,directorship or editorship: in the fields of Catholic Action. Education and the administration of his own religious institute. His studies took him to the Sorbonne. and the Institut Catholique of Paris. His work was honored by the French Government, the French Academy and the University of Montreal. name in the first page.

The Social Justice Agenda: Justice, Ecology, Power and the Church, Doust, Jon
17 Doust, Jon The Social Justice Agenda: Justice, Ecology, Power and the Church
Australia Collins Dove 1991 0859249751 / 9780859249751 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
201 indexed pages. There have been major developments in the spirituality, theology and teaching of the Churches on social issues during the past generation. This book is an attempt to meet the need for a general introduction to the topic of justice-and-peace as it has emerged for the Christian Churches in recent years. The emphasis is on the role that can be played by the institutional Church in responding to social justice issues. Beginning with a general account of the major issues of social justice which confront the Christian today, the author then summarizes what the Churches have to say about these issues. After exploring various ways in which Christians and the Churches can commit themselves to the promotion of justice in society, the author examines the crucial contribution which can be made by the Churches to the search for alternatives, that is towards the building of a society and a world that is more just, more respectful of the earth, more sustainable and more participative. The book then discusses what is involved in the Church itself becoming more just. The key issue here is that the Church has power of various kinds and so it is necessary to examine how this power is to be used in ways that are truly just. The question of formation and the training for various kinds of special ministry in the Church is examined, and ways are explored in which commitment to the transformation of society and practical experience of community-building may be integrated with other aspects of formation. The author is a well-known facilitator, consultant, trainer, resource-person and author. For many years he devoted himself to working, in Ireland and overseas, with community groups, Church groups, and teams of all kinds, with a special emphasis on empowerment, community-building, and conflict-resolution.

Australia ATF Press 2012 1921817771 / 9781921817779 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
xi + 194 pages. 'Public theology' involves the application of biblical and theological principles outside the confines of the church and assesses their implications for wider society. It examines both the theoretical structures of society (the nature of secularity, government, globalisation, pluralism and so forth) and the myriad specific issues involved in daily life (everything from sport to work-place relations to economics). Public theology is also, very importantly, a discipline that is practiced by the 'ordinary' Christian as well as the academic, and it is done in public (with all the scrutiny that entails) and in such a way that it communicates to non-Christians (although it remains a theological endeavour). In a real sense it is theology for the world, from the Word, by the people of God. The volume has a variety of contributors and includes an article on the role of public theology in Islam. Contents: Introduction. Public theology today / Brain Edgar, Paul Babie, David Wilson A. Public theology. law and justice. 1. Public theology, justice and law: a preliminary note / Benny YT Tai 2. Australia David Lovell Publishing 2004 1863551077 / 9781863551076 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
148 pages. Since September 11 2001, the world has been awash with fear and anger and intolerance. UNIYA, the Jesuit Social Justice Center, seeks to make a positive contribution to public debate within this climate through its Jesuit Lenten Seminars. This book contains the papers given by the principle speakers in 2003, Muslims and Christians - Where do we all stand?, and 2004, "A Fair Go in the Age of Terror." Contributions from some of the 2004 panel members are also included. These papers invite us, as individuals and as a nation, to expand our thinking. There is a shared recognition that terrorism cannot be destroyed by armaments and force. The more we resort to heavy-handedness in dealing with social and cultural grievances, the more we contribute to an 'artificial clash of civilisations', and the more we compromise our own rights and identity. All contributors to this book recognise that genuine and disciplined dialogue is one way forward. There is an implicit and explicit hope that we refrain from the discourse of fear, blame and reprisal, and recover the language of dialogue. Contributors: Dr Mohamad Abdalla - Honorary Research Advisor School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics at the University Of Queensland, panel member at Brisbane seminar.
