Heart of Forgiveness: A Practical Path to Healing, Bastis, Madeline Ko-I
1 Bastis, Madeline Ko-I Heart of Forgiveness: A Practical Path to Healing
U.S.A. Red Wheel/ Weiser 2003 1590030273 / 9781590030271 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
109 pages. Madeline Ko-i Bastis is a Buddhist chaplain. She works with cancer, AIDS, psychiatric, and Alzheimer's patients, with battered women, caregivers, inmates, with people with addictions, as well as so-called normal people. In her work she has found that the most difficult thing for people to do is to grant forgiveness. Some people cannot ask for forgiveness, others cannot forgive one another. And some don't realize how harsh they are to themselves when they cannot forgive the one person they have to live with daily - themselves. Heart of Forgiveness helps readers reflect on what forgiveness really means and how it can heal their lives and relationships. Ko-i Bastis explores the difficult emotions that keep us from forgiving and offers tools to help us overcome them. The three parts of Heart of Forgiveness mirror the phrases of the Buddhist Forgiveness practice: For all the harm I have done to others, knowingly or unknowingly, forgive me. For all the harm others have done to me, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive you as much as I can. For all the harm I have done myself, knowingly or unknowingly, I forgive myself. Each section includes stories of forgiveness, a meditation, guided imagery, and other exercises to help understand forgiveness and letting go.

Bubble Trouble, Mahy, Margaret
6 Mahy, Margaret Bubble Trouble
U. K. Puffin 1993 014034635X / 9780140346350 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo Tony Ross
59 pages. Five preposterous stories and narrative poems depict some unusual domestic catastrophes and their creative solutions. ``Bubble Trouble'' deals with a bubble that wafts a baby up into the air until, finally, a pebble shot from a sling-shot (shades of Kahl's The Duchess Bakes a Cake Scribners, 1955; o.p.) brings the child to safety. Word play and alliteration make this nonsense verse a good read-aloud. In ``The Runaway Reptiles,'' an alligator and crocodile disguised as elderly grandparents by their caregivers meet over the back fence, fall in love, and elope. ``Hiccups'' tells, in lilting rhyme, about the transfer of a baby's hiccups to an unsuspecting granny. ``The Gargling Gorilla'' is another ludicrous tale of a young boy who is afraid of gorillas and imagines one hiding under the kitchen cupboard. Finally, ``The Springing Granny'' is a lighthearted verse about a woman who, in winter, creates her own tropical paradise until spring returns. Slight and contrived as these five pieces are, children who have mastered beginning readers may be tickled by the inventive words and zany situations. Sketchy line drawings in black-and-white look amateurish, but capture the craziness of the stories. Not a priority purchase, but harmless fun. --Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY. Creases in the cover.

Recalling Our Own Stories: Spiritual Renewal for Religious Caregivers, Wimberly, Edward P.
10 Wimberly, Edward P. Recalling Our Own Stories: Spiritual Renewal for Religious Caregivers
U.S.A. Jossey-Bass 1997 0787903639 / 9780787903633 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
156 indexed pages. Clergy and other professional religious caregivers routinely find that parishioners and clients expect from them a level of empathy and unconditional love that is literally superhuman -- that embodies God's love. Many of these caregivers expect no less of themselves. Too often, people burn out trying to meet these expectations, and sometimes they damage themselves and others in the process. In this book, Edward P. Wimberly helps religious caregivers renew themselves by making a powerful reconnection with their original call to ministry. He enables readers to reclaim and examine their own stories -- about themselves as individuals, as family members, and as ministers -- stories that have become obscured by myths about who they are supposed to be. He guides readers in "reauthoring" their life stories and beginning to transform personal wounds into sources of compassion and strength.
