Feminism and Theatre, Case, Sue-Ellen
2 Case, Sue-Ellen Feminism and Theatre
U. K. Macmillan 1994 0333390008 / 9780333390009 Reprint Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
149 indexed pages. This study serves as both an introduction to, and an overview of, the relationship between feminism and theatre. lt raises questions for the feminist historian who inherits a tradition of theatre history in which women playwrights and actresses are conspicuously absent and constructs an alternative history of what women have done. In analyzing radical feminism and theatre, materialist feminism and theatre and women of colour, the author explains how political movement has influenced the stage. In examining the development of feminist aesthetics, experiments in organization, performance style and audience, Sue-Ellen Case simultaneously traces the new role of the female actor, the new position of the spectator, the new form of play and the new role of the critic. Examples from the United States, Britain, France and Germany are used to illustrate the common ground and the differences between the feminisms and the women in theatre in these countries.

The Rock Pool: A Novel, Connolly, Cyril
4 Connolly, Cyril The Rock Pool: A Novel
U. K. Penguin 1963 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Good 16mo
157 pages. This is Connolly's only novel and is set at the end of season in a small resort in the south of France. Its main character, Naylor, starts with a study of the 'decadent' inhabitants of that resort but in the end he becomes one of them. The author had difficulty in having the work published. The British publishers objected to its heavy lesbian content. The Obelisk Press of Paris then published it in 1936, 11 years later, it was published without any alteration in Britain by Hamish Hamilton in 1947. Edmund Wilson saw the novel as follows: 'A snobbish and mediocre young literary man from Oxford, with a comfortable regular income, spends the summer on the Riviera with an artists’ and writers’ colony. His first attitude is interested but patronizing: he tells himself that he has come as an observer and will study the community like a rock pool. But the denizens of the pool drag him down into it. The story, which owes something to South Wind and Compton Mackenzie’s novels of Capri, differs from them through its acceleration, which, as in the wildly speeded-up burlesques, has something demoniacal about it.' And Desmond MacCarthy, the famous Sunday Times critic, wrote: 'I have read it twice, and I shall read it again, remembering it between whiles as a theme admirably and seriously handled, and as a novel written with a peremptory, witty precision, and a spirited, off-hand elegance extremely pleasing.' Tanning book.

7 Gillett, Alex Not a Proper Fishing Day at All
New Zealand The Halcyon Press 1986 0908685068 / 9780908685066 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo Bill Jenks
108 pages including drawings. The author placed himself firmly in the vanguard of New Zealand fishing writers with the publication of ‘A Taupo Fishing Diary.’ Magazine articles published within New Zealand and abroad. He has fished in Britain, Australia and New Zealand and his writing confirms the old axiom that fishing is not just about catching fish. He writes of high country streams, North and South Island lakes and rivers, quiet English water, Irish loughs, and some of the best fishing places in Australia. ‘Not a Proper Fishing Day at All’ takes a nostalgic stroll through all of these and is enhanced by the wit and humour which his readers have come to expect. Gillett writes from a deep love of fishing and the places it has taken him. While ‘Not a Proper Fishing Day at All’ is essentially a book for fishermen there is much to amuse and entertain those unfortunates not afllicted by the ‘Divine Fever’. Some of the subtleties may escape this deprived group, but fishermen will understand.

Hooligans or Rebels? An Oral History of Working Class Childhood, 1889-1939, Humphries, Stephen
9 Humphries, Stephen Hooligans or Rebels? An Oral History of Working Class Childhood, 1889-1939
UK Basil Blackwell Pub 1984 0631132864 / 9780631132868 Reprint Soft Cover Good 12mo
279 indexed pages including b/w illustrations. This work is a complete history of the deprivation and treatment of children of laboring classes in Great Britain during early 20th century. Hooliganism, teenage gangs, vandalism, juvenile crime, classroom anarchy - are these the products of our present society or do they have a past? According to Stephen Humphries, the rebellion of working-class children and youth at school, at work and in the street has a long history. Using oral evidence from taped archives, he challenges the established view that rebellious behaviour was due to indiscipline rather than intolerable social and economic pressures. The recollections of working-class people, rarely if ever-heard in conventional histories, provide an authentic and often moving account of how working-class children coped with a harsh and oppressive world. Stephen Humphries, formerly Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Essex, is now a writer and broadcaster with a special interest in social history and oral tradition. Ex-library markings/attachments or remnants of and covered in adhesive plastic.

French in Australia: new Prospects, Joseph Lo Bianco; Alain Montell
10 Joseph Lo Bianco; Alain Montell French in Australia: new Prospects
Australia Australian Federation of Modern Language Teachers' Associations 1990 0731646592 / 9780731646593 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
111 pages. The purpose of this publication is not to plead a special case for French language education, nor even to rank the teaching and learning of French in a comparative way with other languages. The primary goal is instead to describe the new and continuing roles of French in Australian education by referring to the relevance of French in public life and in intellectual, cultural and commercial endeavours (..). French is not important to Australia because France lies across the channel from Britain; rather it is important because 42 countries and ?ve continents and a large number of international organisations and individuals use it or accord same special status to it. French is important because it is one of the key languages of Europe which is about to become the world‘s largest single market. it is important because it is the second lingua franca of the South Pacific. This publication which produces a powerful rationale for the teaching and learning of French in Australia, is divided into five chapters: The extent of French teaching in Australia today; The proximity between French and English; French as a world language; French as a practical and commercial language; The culture and lifestyle of French.

Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation: Backstage with Barry Humphries, Lahr, John
11 Lahr, John Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation: Backstage with Barry Humphries
U.S.A. University of California Press 2000 0520223055 / 9780520223059 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
xi + 243 pages including b/w illustrations. John Lahr is one of the most celebrated critics of the performing arts. Winner of Britain's 1992 Roger Machell Award for the best writing about public performance, "Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation" is an insider's account of a great clown and a great act. It takes us backstage at London's Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, with Barry Humphries, and into the weird and wonderful world of his show-stopping creation - Dame Edna Everage. Humphries is a prodigious comic talent. His copresence in Edna - a character so real to the public that her autobiography, "My Gorgeous Life", appeared on the nonfiction list - actively invites speculation about reality and fantasy, male and female. With her 'natural wisteria' hair and her harlequin eyeglasses, Dame Edna was the first solo performer to sell out the most famous theater in England, and she also took the United States by storm, filling theaters from coast to coast. Hilarious and malign, polite and rude, highbrow and very low, the character Barry Humphries inhabits is a bundle of contradictions. John Lahr, the son of another comic genius, takes us behind the scenes to investigate how a provincial dandy from Melbourne transformed himself into one of the most unlikely megastars of today. In showing the connection between Humphries' comedy and the life it parodies, "Dame Edna Everage and the Rise of Western Civilisation" goes beyond reportage to an exploration of the nature of comedy, a subject that Lahr has pursued over the years in his acclaimed biographies of "Bert Lahr", "Noel Coward", and "Joe Orton". Richly entertaining and engagingly written, this book is an anecdotal treatise on the nature of comedy and an absorbing inquiry into what makes us laugh.

United Kingdom Bloodaxe Books 1992 1852241934 / 9781852241933 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
112 pages. According to Peter Forbes, Maxwell is one of the few poets of recent years to have invented a style. Maxwell’s widely acclaimed ?rst collection "Tale of the Mayor’s Son" marked the emergence of an exciting new talent in contemporary poetry. As well as being a Poetry Book Society Choice, it was shortlisted for the Mail on Sunday /john Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the Sunday Times Young Writer’s Award. Now the proli?c Maxwell has produced his follow-up volume, "Out of the Rain", another brilliant and unashamedly bulky collection, more ambitious in scope and with an even sharper focus on life in Britain in the nineties. ‘Glyn Maxwell covers a greater distance in a single line than most people do in a poem. There is an extraordinary propulsion in his work, owing in part to his tendency to draw metaphor from the syntax itself. He is a poet of immense promise and unforgettable delivery’. ‘Glyn Maxwell’s originality lies in his astonishing ability to orchestrate asides, parenthetical quips, side-of-the-mouth ruminations into a formal verse with a bravura not dared before. His poems have the vigour and freshness of ?rst drafts, which preserves their immediacy, but they are more ?nished and rewarding than most contemporary verse’. (... from the book backcover.) Australia ANU / Cork University Press 1990 0731510178 / 9780731510177 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
vii + 252 indexed pages including Oliver MacDonagh's list of writings. There are ten essays in this book which were written by Peter Clarke, Mark Finnane, Cameron Hazlehurst, Allan Martin and Deryck Schreuder and were presented at a seminar in September 1989 in Canberra to honour Oliver MacDonagh in the year of his retirement as W.K. Hancock Professor of History in the Institute of Advanced Studies at the Australian National University. Oliver crowned the occasion with his paper on John Henry Newman. The essays by Ian d'Alton, Tom Dunne, John O'Brien and Pauric Travers were offered by Irish colleagues and former pupils who were unable to attend the gathering. Each offering has its starting point in Oliver's work. The range is extraordinarily wide, but it inescapably neglects problems in Irish, British, American and Australian historical and literacy studies to which Oliver MacDonagh has made luminous, fundamental published contributions, let alone the gentle but profound intellectual stimulation he has given in conversation to pupils and colleagues. Oliver Ormond Gerard Michael MacDonagh was a distinguished professor of Irish history who made a particular study of the historic relationship between Ireland and the United Kingdom.

ANZAC Infantryman 1914-15: From New Guinea to Gallipoli, Sumner, Ian
16 Sumner, Ian ANZAC Infantryman 1914-15: From New Guinea to Gallipoli
USA Osprey Pub Co 2011 1849083282 / 9781849083287 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo Graham Turner
64 indexed pages including b/w and colour illustrations. Explores the recruitment, training, and combat experiences of the famous ANZAC infantry in the opening years of World War I (1914-1918). Worried about the growing power of Japan and the German Far Eastern colonies, Australia and New Zealand had both introduced conscription in 1912. When war broke out in 1914, the men already in the system provided a small nucleus of trained soldiers, but at least half of those who went on to serve abroad had no previous military experience. Australians rushed to the colors even before their government had formally offered troops to Britain. Some initial training was undertaken in Australia, but most of the work had to be done when the AIF reached Egypt. Although the Anzacs were expecting to go on to France, little use was made of the experience of men who had already served on the Western Front. The decision to employ the Anzacs in the very different theatre of Gallipoli came as a complete surprise. The events at the Anzac and Suvla beach-heads have acquired an almost legendary status. In combat, the ANZACs responded with great discipline and a bravery that sometimes bordered on recklessness. This book takes a close look at day-to-day life in the trenches of Gallipoli. The terrain was hard and stony, making the construction of trenches difficult. Water was constantly in short supply, and the rear areas remained well within the range of Turkish artillery. It also explores how the wounded were treated, the effects of disease in the crowded beach-head, and of weather-related complaints such as frostbite, which hospitalized many men. The experience of Gallipoli had a profound effect on those who survived, imbuing the ANZACs with an esprit de corps that characterized their superlative performance in France. Indeed it continues to mark the psyche of the two nations down to the present day.

The Origins of British Social Policy, Thane, Pat
17 Thane, Pat The Origins of British Social Policy
U. K. Croom Helm 1981 0856643319 / 9780856643316 Reprint Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
209 indexed pages. The emergence of new ‘welfare’ responsibilities of the State has been of central importance in the history of Britain, as of other societies, in the past century. This book arose from the dissatisfaction felt by the authors - all professional academics working in the feld of the history of social policy with conventional approaches to the subject. Too often it is treated as the story of the progressive growth of humanitarianism and of the desire for social equality. From their researches into the history of such important aspects of policy as unemployment, old age pensions, the Poor Law, family allowances and other policies concerning children, it became obvious that this approach was inadequate. Australia Centre for Independent Studies 2001 1864320575 / 9781864320572 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
xi, 92 indexed pages. Includes bibliographical references. Worldwide support tor Federalism is greater than ever before, but in Australia it is still disparaged and its advantages overlooked. A federal system is more adaptable to popular preferences, more open to experiment and rational evaluation, more shock-resistant and more stable. Its decentralised and participatory structure-essential in a large country - buttresses liberty and counters elitism. Through competition, it lightens the burden at government on the people. The duplication' point is misunderstood: Australia spends proportionally less on government than unitary Britain. Current economic, political and intellectual trends in Australia and abroad may help to revitalise Australian federalism and make the most ot its potential. The GST and the lack of a formal national bill of rights are positive factors in this equation. The author suggests a number of simple and inexpensive steps that would help Australia to tap the benefits of Federalism more successfully than it is doing today. The author is Emeritus Professor, University of Queensland, and barrister-at-law.

How the Church of England Works, Welsby, Paul A.
20 Welsby, Paul A. How the Church of England Works
UK CIO Pub 1985 0715137077 / 9780715137079 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Good 12mo
85 indexed pages. If there ever was a time when a parish could order its affairs in isolation from the wider Church, that time is certainly past. The Church beyond the parish bears on the life of the parish increasingly and at many points. So this successor to The Layman and his Church as a handbook to the administrative structures of the Church of England covers a Wider field than the earlier book. There is much in the way the Church is organised that only makes sense in the light of its history. As a historian with extensive experience of the Church's business at every level, from the PCC to the General Synod, Canon Paul Welsby makes a well-qualified guide. He explains in detail the legal and administrative facts that a church officer needs to know in running a modern parish. But these include the role of the diocese and of the cathedral today, the functions of the deanery and diocesan synods, the work of the General Synod and its boards and councils, the Church's legal system, its finances, and the Church-State relationship, so Canon Welsby gives more than cursory treatment to all of these. Finally the Church of England itself falls into place as a member of the Worldwide Anglican Communion and as a partner in joint action with many other Churches, both on the world scene and in Britain. Paul A. Welsby is the author of a number of biographies and historical works, including A History of the Church of England 1945-80. As Prolocutor of the Convocation of Canterbury from 1973-80 he was joint chairman of the House of Clergy of General Synod, and he has been a Residentiary Canon of Rochester Cathedral since 1966.
