The Karma of Culture, Arasanayagam, Jean
5 Arasanayagam, Jean The Karma of Culture
Canada Trafford Pub 2005 1412050790 / 9781412050791 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
xxi + 150 pages. This book provides a thoughtful approach to some important and highly topical questions on what constitutes Australia's nationhood. It appeals to academics, public servants, students, and many members of the general public. Culture is ubiquitous. Culture is all-pervasive. Many (mainly Asian) immigrants take into white host nations strongly divergent, and historically durable, cultural stances and practices. In the migrant-receiving countries of the Western world, the core issue of a conflict between a sustained attempt by such immigrants to retain their cultures and the osmotic force of equal opportunity offering an earlier and smoother integration into the values and mores of the host people bobs up and down in the seas of social policy. Cultural diversity can therefore be de-stabilising to a hitherto cohesive society. The national identity which had evolved through the merging of culturally compatible tribes and peoples can now be seen to be threatened. Whilst this book is about Australia, the issues raised have relevance for all immigrant-receiving nations. One's culture provides the template for dealing with life. Its base is laid in childhood, through the values imposed by family and community. The cultural practices of one's tribe reinforce these values and associated perceptions. The impacts of nurture (experience) upon nature (inheritance), as one passes through life, are filtered through this network of cultural values. A conditioned belief among some in the West that a human zygote equates to a human being, contrasting with an older Asian belief that the human soul enters a baby's body at or after birth, is reflective of divergent cultural values. The need for immigrants to reconcile their inherited cultural values and associated practices with the predominant values and practices of their adopted nation-state can create stresses on both cultures. The issues which arise from this cross-cultural impact are those of: equal opportunity; whether a unified people can arise from a wide tribal diversity; individualism vs the collective (the family), ie whether the individual or the family unit has priority in terms of rights and responsibilities; the definition of family, and its role in society; cultural hegemony and political sovereignty in a globalising nation-state; the place of the Creator in modern life; and whether Australia's 'fair-go' social and policy ethos needs an infusion of Asian values.

What Not to Name Your Baby, Borgenicht, Joe
11 Borgenicht, Joe What Not to Name Your Baby
U.S.A. Pocket Books 2005 1416511245 / 9781416511243 1st Edition Pictorial Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
146 pages. This book offers a little light relief to the serious business of choosing a name for your baby. They are hard to escape, these days, the names that will cause numerous hardships in the playground. From the pop star wannabees (Courtney, Kylie, Britney), through locations (China, Brooklyn), passing by the shops (Timberland, Armani), along the hippy trail (Leaf, Sunset, Pagan) to those heading for trouble (Romeo, Chastity) the inspirations for baby names are countless. Parents looking for novelty might turn to famous sidekicks (Tonto, Garfunkel) or indeed dictators (Saddam, Benito) before settling on a name that sounds normal but is damn tricky to spell (Kaycee, Genni, Jho). Joe Borgenicht offers nearly 1500 names which absolutely, positively, cannot be used for a child. With the help of this book, readers are less likely to have their children resent them - well, okay, that's a stretch - but at least the parents can say they tried. There is an inscription in the first page.

Australia Spectrum Pub 1992 0867861789 / 9780867861785 1st Edition Glossy Pictorial Soft Cover Good 12mo
149 indexed pages including bibliographical references. A collection of poems by Fr Thomas X. Corrigan. ". . .Before the burning bush of God's self-revelation in and through everyday events, he takes off his shoes in recognition and reverence. . .there is an experience of God to be discerned in the ordinariness and even the 'greyness' or sameness of our daily living, in the world around us, the rushing traffic of the busy city, the crying of a baby in the night, the dropping of a leaf or the curl of a wave on the beach, the loss of a loved one, the warmth of friendship and the distress of a quarrel. This is the very essence of these reflections... ...Reading this book offers both inspiration and challenge. Because the poet instinctively understands and articulates human experience, many of us will be inspired and excited by the accuracy with which we find our experience mirrored here... ...Life is to be lived in somewhat the same way as a connoisseur drinks wine, savoured, registered by the senses, held on the tongue till all the nuances of its flavour and aroma are revealed. This little book is testimony to the fact that Father Tom Corrigan is a connoisseur of life..." (From the Foreword by Evelyn Woodward, RSI) Thomas X. Corrigan is a priest of the Wagga Wagga Diocese. He grew up in the Upper Murray Region of Southern N.S.W. and studied for the priesthood in the Seminaries at Springwood and Manly, being ordained in 1973. While serving in Parishes he has had particular involvement in the Cursillo movement and Youth ministry, and has done Retreat work with young people and adults.

Australia Elsevier 2009 0729538192 / 9780729538190 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
96 pages including references. The human body comes with many mechanisms, checks and balances, and this ensures you get adequate nutrition, as long as it is provided with enough variety. Optimal nutrition leads to good health and quality of life, whereas under-nutrition has an effect on brain development, immunity and disease. There is now such a wide variety of food available and much of this food is already prepared for you, but not all of the food available is produced with optimum nutrition in mind. This book will give you information about the food you are eating and what foods will help to keep you healthy. No matter whether you are young and healthy, or older and starting to be concerned about the way your health is going, improving your current and future health prospects just by changing what you eat is achievable. Naturally, diet alone is not sufficient to improve your health, and if you combine a healthier diet with physical activity, the benefits gained will start to be their own incentive. Jacqueline Cuthbertson has been a registered nurse/midwife for many years and has a degree in health science. She has worked in paediatrics and maternity units in country hospitals and also larger metropolitan units. Jacqueline writes for health, mother and baby magazines and health journals, and has a strong interest in preventative and natural health care, which centres around nutrition, complementary therapies, and natural childbirth.
