143 pages including drawings and glossary. Johannes Scheffler assumed the name Angelus Silesius on his leaving the Lutheran church to become a Catholic. He became enmeshed in the bitter controversies of post-Reformation Europe. Soon after his death, however, his masterpiece was claimed by Protestants and Catholics alike as their mystical classic. Frederick Franck shows the poets macro-ecumenical significance in the essay that introduces his translation of these verses, and by adding a "running commentary" of sayings by the ancient Japanese and Chinese masters, with whom this Christian mystic shows a remarkable affinity.

84 pages including colour illustrations. An expression of individual pursuit of poetry and art, but the ideal of co-operation and collaboration has been inherent in the compilation, pre-production and publication through to the launch of this book. From seventy poems, monologues and dialogues, l have selected forty for this collection in order to provide a balance that could evoke a wry smile without attitude, an implicit message that could be interpreted to induce a social awareness with or without conscience, a description of life in a moment or an impression formed from a glance that identifies with the rather unique character of life to be found in these localities. Poetry and art pertain to many dimensions of thought but to find the connection in meanings between the two genres offers yet another reality - a shared reality to which end the projection of this book has been given a priority of focus. In the interest of future collaboration between poets and visual artists, the cross-referential nature of this book seeks either a commonality or a counterpoint with regard to meanings implicit in the written word and those represented in the aesthetic and contextual value of the art. lt invites the observer or reader to find connections between the metaphors and analogies of the poems and the images and symbols of the artwork.

A major reissue program is scheduled, to include classic individual collections from each decade, some of which have long been unavailable: Wallace Stevens's Harmonium and Ezra Pound's Personae from the 1920s; W.H. Auden's Poems (1930); Robert Lowell's Life Studies from the 1950s; John Berryman's 77 Dream Songs and Philip Larkin's The Whitsun Weddings from the 1960s; Ted Hughes's Gaudete and Seamus Heaney's Field Work from the 1970s; Michael Hofmann's Acrimony and Douglas Dunn's Elegies from the 1980s. Timed to celebrate publication of Seamus Heaney's new collection, Electric Light, the relaunch is intended to re-emphasize the predominance of Faber Poetry, and to celebrate a series which has played a shaping role in the history of modern poetry since its inception in the 1920s. John Berryman (1914-72) was born John Smith in McAlester, Oklahoma, and educated at Colombia College and Cambridge University. He later held posts at Harvard and Princeton, before taking up a professorship at the University of Minnesota. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1965 for 77 Dream Songs, and he continued to build upon this series of poems, publishing the end result, The Dream Songs, in 1969. His Collected Poems was published after his death in 1991.

172 pages. try has been a fertile source of inspiration to the many writers and artists who have followed in his footsteps. In this collection Patti Smith has collected together her personal selection of Blake's poems, including the complete poems from the famous Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, to give a singular picture of this unique genius. William Blake was born on 28 November 1757 in London. Instead of being sent to school he was given drawing classes from a young age. When he was fourteen he was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire and he later went on to work as an engraver, illustrator, printer and drawing teacher. In 1779 he became a student at the Royal Academy. In 1782 he married Catherine Boucher who was to become a great support to him throughout his life. His first collection of poems, Poetical Sketches was published in 1793. In 1789 he published Songs of Innocence which was followed by Songs of Experience in 1793. In the early 1800s he wrote his epic prophetic poems Milton and Jerusalem. He developed his own practice of illustrating his poetical works with his own etchings, producing beautifully illuminated editions. Blake's political beliefs were controversial for the times; he supported the French Revolution, condemned slavery and the subjugation of women. His religious beliefs were also idiosyncratic and he reported seeing visions of angels at various points in his life. Blake died, poor and in obscurity on 12 August 1827.

Contemporary literary theory and the reading of poetry, Buchbinder, David
19 Buchbinder, David Contemporary literary theory and the reading of poetry
Australia Macmillan 1991 0732905087 / 9780732905088 1st Edition Soft Cover Very Good 12mo
x + 148 indexed pages. The last two decades have seen an unprecedented flourishing in the field of theory, whether literary, social or cultural. Many of these theories present a significant obstacle to the student of literature, who may be daunted on the one hand by their sheer richness and complexity, and on the other by their typical density of expression and style. Moreover, many current theories focus on narrative genres, to the virtual exclusion of poetry, once central to the writing of theory and its application. Contemporary Literary Theory and the Reading of Poetry addresses these issues, firstly by exploring the nature and use of theory in the reading of literary texts, explaining that no reading of a work of literature can be innocent, that all readings are framed, implicitly or explicitly, by a theory of some kind. Second, the book outlines and explores six important and current theories or types of theory: "Anglo-American New Criticism, structuralism, deconstruction, Russian Formalism, historicism (including, among others, Marxist, Bakhtinian and Foucauldian theory), and gender theory. Contemporary Literary Theory and the Reading of Poetry situates these historically and conceptually in relation to one another. Third, it shows how each theory or type of theory works by reading sample poems according to the approach of each theory. This book thus supplies the need of many a student of literature for material that both explicates conte_mporary theory and illustrates it, with specific reference, in this instance to poetry. Lucid and accessible in style, Contemporary Literary Theory and the Reading of Poetry is an invaluable text for the student interested in learning about current literary theory and how it can be usefully applied. David Buchbinder is a senior lecturer in the School of Communication and Cultural Studies at Curtin University of Technology in Western Australia. Though he has written widely on literature, film and television, and culture, he is perhaps best known for his work on men, masculinities and male sexualities, in which field he has, in addition to many journal articles and book chapters, published three books: Masculinities and Identities (1994), Performance Anxieties: Re-producing Masculinity (1998) and Studying Men and Masculinities (2012).

Australia La Mancha Pub 1993 0646131095 / 9780646131092 1st Edition Glossy Soft Cover Very Good 12mo Avril Kimberlee
59 pages. Bymoy writes: "Some of these versed yams and ballads spring from my personal experiences as a knockabout working Australian. Other verses are jokes and yams told to me by others; friends, acquaintances, strangers. Still others are once well-known hoary old yarns, in the oral tradition of the bush, which I have re-told in what I hope is a new way, for a new generation. Few of them suffer from a lack of embroidery by way of added fantasy in the hope of making a good story better. It is surprising though, the number of them which are based on fact; fantasies with more than just an element of truth to them, with only the names changed to protect the guilty." Bymoy has worked in many jobs, many of them outdoors and it is obvious that he has observed much and absorbed most of it. Together, we offer this collection for your enjoyment and amusement. It all began when I was sitting one day in the bar of the Lake George Hotel in Bungendore with my friend Terry. He was telling me stories of his life as a child in outback West Australian towns. There were only a few other people in the bar, as it was a weekday early afternoon. He recounted the story of himself and his sister playing a prank on the yardman of the pub owned by their parents. It was a funny story, well told.
